Hi. A friend gave me a damaged DS3 controller. It has nothing broken, only the usual wear and tear at the X button and right analog stick.

The problem is, it only works for some time. The longer it is left turned off, the longer it works. As an example, I left it on the shelf for a week and it worked for almost an hour. A day later, it only worked for a few minutes. If I wait a few hours, it will only work for some seconds. After it stops working, all lights go off and it will not charge on the PS3, PC or Halfmann's universal charger with USB port. It's simply dead.

Initially i thought it was the battery, but even without a battery the same happens: after working for a moment it dies and will not turn on.

Another friend told me it could have damaged capacitors. Could that be the problem? Is it fixable for a electronic newbie like me? I sometimes use a soldering iron to solder wires, and once replaced a laptop's DC Jack, that's as far as my experience goes...

Have you tried the same battery in another controller to see if it will charge.Just to make suke it isn't the battery.I would do that first before anything else.It sounds like the battery isn't holding a charge.

Shouldn't it work with USB even without the battery? The symptoms I described happen with or without the battery. It originally comes with the small MK11-2902/610mAh battery + bracket, but I also have the bigger LIP1359/750mAh battery, both output a little over 3,7v in a multimeter (fully charged?).

EDIT: I also have a standard PS3 controller that works fine, but I'm avoiding messing with it, because as lucky as I am, I would end up with 2 bad controllers...

EDIT2: The first time I opened it, I noticed it was full of animal hairs so I promptly cleaned it. Last weekend I was messing around with it, it didn't turn on as usual, in a hurry I left it open with the battery unplugged. Today I used a tyre pressure gauge to give it a good air blow inside, then connected the original smaller battery, pressed the Home button, the controller started flashing 4 leds and then I plugged it to the PC using MotionInJoy drivers. It charged for an hour up to 16h20 local time, now all 4 leds are steady on, I believe it means 100% battery. Let's see how long it stays on this time...

EDIT3: Well it seems the controller is working normally! I don't have a PS3 right now to test it, but it's working fine with my laptop's USB and Bluetooth. If connected through USB it charges then stays on with 4 leds lit, if connected through Bluetooth it auto shutdowns after about 6 minutes of inactivity, only 4th led is lit when powered (100% charge?). When it powers off and I press the PS button, the 4 leds flash for 2 or 3 seconds then it promptly connects to Bluetooth.

I guess all it needed was a good blow LOL
