I am running on 3.41 original fw with ps3key. I have not decided yet to use a cfw. Is there any recent development regarding diskless gaming? I have read sth abt bdemu. Is this what I am looking for? For example games like enslaved: odyssey to the west and little big planet cant play diskless, right?

Hello Tomatoegg
i will answer this for you, however this will be a little strange because the simple answer is YES/NO. ill get in to what that means
YES- you can use things like Multiman or Gaia Manager 2.07 and it allows for diskless gaming, however you will need to upgrade to 3.55, if you do i would recommend you use wanikoko 3.55 cfw and geohot 3.55 cfw, then installing gaia manager 2.07.
NO- the no part is that there are only a few games that diskless playworks with and most of the great games dont work with out a disk.. good example God of War 3 and Batman Arkayn assylum.
in addtion ill add that you guys can pretty much ask me any questino about any game system that is out right now and i can answer it for you... Whether it be Wii, xbox, xbox 360, ps2, ps3, psp, DS........
Iv modded every system and backed up my games to SD cards, Flash drives, Disks, External HDD etc... just ask away im sure i can answer it or give you a program name that can do it.

you can go to hermes cfw 3.41; in combination with the latest multiman (+ bdemu) you can run almost any game discless. multiman has no payload incorporated, so bdemu or an external payload is needed. hermes also brought out his own backupmanager, haven't tried it yet but should work flawlessly with his own cfw (with the hermes v4d payload). for the 3.41 hermes cfw, you can always go back to ofw 3.41, so no need to go to 3.55.
for gaia i don't know if it runs on 3.41; but gaia has a payload incorporated. but my best results are with multiman, all games i tried run without a disc (with bdemu). i am running multiman + hermes cfw 3.41; also running multiman on kmeah 3.55 (on another console). but work just fine, since multiman does all the discless gaming stuff.
but multiman should also work just fine with your dongle; no need to go to any cfw for that to work. advantage of cfw is that you don't have to mess around with the dongle, for the rest it is much the same.

no, not possible.
only custom firmware or jailbreak dongle (firmware must be 3.55 or lower currently, perhaps in the future 3.60 will also generate a cfw. but for now, only 3.55 or lower)

if your console is running official firmware (ofw) 3.41 or below, you can either use a jailbreak dongle or install a custom firmware (cfw). i use hermes cfw 3.41. for games that require newer firmware, you either have to mess with some files or download the patched files.
if you have ofw 3.42-3.55; you can run a 3.55 cfw. i run also kmeah, but you can run another if you like (geohot, waninko etc.). then you only need to patch games that need a firmware higher that 3.55, there aren't many games that use higher firmware. so with cfw 3.55 the most games do not need any editing.
btw. you can also use a jailbreak dongle to downgrade a 3.55 ofw to 3.41, but that will break bluray capability (although there are tools around that supposedly lets you remarry the bluray drive with your motherboard). i wouldn't go this way...
you can download all the custom firmwares and backup managers (like multiman and gaia) from the internet, just google for it. the hax and psxscene sites have them as a download. you can go to those sites, or just google them.
the main difference between cfw 3.41 or jailbreak dongle with fw 3.41 is that there is more homebrew available that there is for cfw 3.55 (waninko, kmeah).
BUT
if you only use your ps3 for gaming, then cfw 3.55 gives you the best game support since almost all games run on fw 3.55 or lower. so no need to patch or spoof the firmware (3.41) to let your console think that you are on a higher firmware to run a game that needs a higher firmware to run properly.
off course you can always go back from cfw to ofw, and vice versa e.g. from 3.55 cfw you can go back to 3.55 ofw. from cfw 3.41 ==> ofw 3.41; ofw 3.15==>ofw 3.41 ==> cfw 3.41 ==> ofw 3.41 ==> ofw 3.55 ==> cfw 3.55.
what i have :
ps3 with original fw 3.15; ofw 3.15==> ofw 3.41 ==> cfw 3.41 (hermes cfw) + multiman
ps3 with original fw 3.55; ofw 3.55 ==> cfw 3.55 (kmeah) + multiman.
all files on google or on hax forum
good luck
where to get the games from....
the usual places; friends, gamestores etc.

I dont see any reason for anyone to remain on 3.41 and use a dongle. It is better to install cfw so at least you have the ability to play some of the newer pre 3.56 games
As for diskless, i dont bother, I always have a disc in teh drive and start the game from the xmb. I dont think the drive it used sontinuously I tink it only checks it every so often, but not sure about that.

well, some people just don't have the balls to update to a cfw 3.41 and prefer to stay on ofw 3.41 and use a dongle. i also prefer a cfw over a dongle

some people don't have a working bd drive, mines are shot. laser failed, so no emulation is possible. no need to replace them since CFW off course. i need to play discless though, but it works great.
the drive isn't used continuously, it only spins on game start up i believe. hence the emulation part with a real disc in it. i don't think it needs a disc any further after the game has started, which is off course on the hard drive....

Well you can now remarry drives to another ps3, previously this couldnt be done, so if you can get ahold of another drive you can add one to your ps3 again if needed.

More newb questions. I've been out of the loop with the PS3. I use to have a modded PS2 though.
I see some iso files out there for PS3. Can you use a cfw to boot the iso's from an external HDD or do you need to burn them to a disk?
Can you play online with a cfw?
Is Sony capable of telling if you are running a cfw?

newby questions indeed.....
ps3 cannot boot/run iso's, you need to extract the iso's to the harddrive (internal or external). just as with the modded ps2 (that also couldn't run iso's as is, extraction is needed)
you can play online with cfw, but sony can detect that. the consequences of playing online with a cfw... well, who knows? perhaps a ban as is with the xbox 360, police knocking at your door... one thing is sure, you are breaking the EULA, there will be consequences of some kind now and or in the futur.
