Be careful everyone...this was just released less than an hour ago, and I am already hearing reports of bricked slims (but I am not 100% sure that these are using the real Waninkoko or the fake one released last night)

How can we differentiate the real from the fake?

You can download from Waninkoko's twitter at http://twitter.com/hackinblack
People are complaining that this is randomly bricking PHAT PS3's especially the 60GB version so its better to wait for an updated version.
PS3 Slims are being bricked too.
For the moment until there is a new updated release don't download and install on your PS3.

Waninkoko is more famous for hacking the wii, he made a lot of stuff such as apps and found eploits etc.

Someone has posted a way to unbrick a ps3, dont know if it works or not. Hopefully it does work, kindda feel sorry for all those who rushed to flash their consoles only to have then brick up.
tbh I would not have installed it anyway even if it didnt brick consoles. Best to wait for others to test it out then when the all clear is out that it works properly on all systems, then you can safely use it without any worry of bricking.
Love the way the people react to news such as this. Only a few hours ago people were "like omg wanin is so great, he's awesome". then he releases the cfw reports of bricking and it suddenly changes to "omg omg it bricked my ps3, wtf, why did he release this, I hate him, the bastard".
Really these kids just have no respect, all they care about is that they get what they want. No patience either, liek back in Feb with geohot the same thing happened, when he was taking too long people stated flaming him and he decided to stop.

Some of them are definitely whiny ungrateful buggers. Did he warn people when it was released that bricking was a possibility?
Nothing to complain about if everyone was cautioned. I'm trying to wait it out until c4eva's FW comes out, the xbox stuff is great.

There is always a disclaimer in this kind of stuff and it always says "Use At Your Own Risk"
The problem is that people jump too quickly for stuff like this and it was only released a few hours ago so people are going to make mistakes etc on the installation and modification.
People just seem to never learn.
In haste makes waste...

The fake one isn't fake... it was just another attempt... I tested that one on a slim and it worked...
not saying you should try it... and i didn't test any boot managers

I'm actually debating on if I want to give try this or not. I'm still running OFW 3.40. Would be great of someone would post a video of it actually working.

You are wrong, the fake one is indeed fake, the fw named 3.41, is indeed 3.55, it was a lame attempt to get people to update to official fw 3.55, check here http://www.ps3hax.net/2011/01/waninkoko-cfw-with-ntfs-support-and-backups-using-multiman/
And the plot thickens.

The best place to get the legitimate files is from waninkoko twitter account as stated in my post above and not from an unknown source as this will help in preventing fake files that can/will brick your ps3's (guys use some common sense!).
Also there is a database where waninkoko wants people to add their experience to his database located here: http://bit.ly/gZq6Zt with their serial, model numbers whether or not it worked for them to help the community so stay tuned and keep checking the link.

It is Waninkoko's firmware that is bricking consoles, not some fake FW, nothing else just Waninkoko's and i feel sorry for the guy.

Your right but there is a fake one floating around and i did state that people shouldn't use waninkoko's until they know for sure so everyone should keep checking the database to find out more.
once people start adding their experience to it and then we should find out the answer to which ps3 models are compatible with this CFW and which are not.

Yeah, people trusted his release due to the work he's done on the wii, which is probably one of the reasons many didnt give a second thought to install it.
Yes there is a fake out there, but as pointed out it will install on the ps3, but that is because it is just a copy of the official sony 3.55 fw.

It would be good if waninkoko let us know which model ps3's he tested his work on as a lot of people now on ps3hax.net are saying that models with 256mb nand are being bricked but ps3's with 16mb nand are not...

Yeah that's a good point he should do that.

I hope there is a way to restore bricked ps3's because this flashing stuff is pretty risky and I feel sorry for the people who have units that are now useless.

Sure, there's a way to recover these bricks. However, it's a hardware solution involving soldering a nor/nand flasher to the board. The lv2 kernel is required to enter recovery mode AND service mode. These bricks are likely bad LV2 kernels, so the system is completely dead. With a nor/nand flasher, you can write proper files directly without needing the system to work properly.
I feel sorry for the people who jumped on this and got bricked. Waninkoko should have done a lot more testing, but I think he was trying to answer the scenes constant begging for "good custom firmware". I'm sure ego played it's part in this, as well.Mathieulh, however, is just pointing and laughing. Reading his comments... does he really have any room to comment on geohots ego issues?

Wanin did ask for testers, onyl 4 people helped him. So he was only able to base results from those consoles. None of them had 256 nand so the problem did not appear.
Well he needed testers and looks like he managed to get a hundred of so testers, now he can improve his cfw :P
As for Mathieulh, yes he's done some good stuff, but he too has an ego, and those with egos prefer to work alone and set things back.
