Does replacing the hard drive in a PS3 eliminate your firmware? I guess my bottom line is to answer if I replace the hard drive in my PS3, can I then install 3.55 firmware? Or would simply pulling the hard drive and formatting it on a pc work?

Or does the firmware get stored on the hard drive at all? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

No, to all questions. The firmware isn't stored on the harddrive.

Xbox 360: Slim untouched with a faked 320 GB harddrive for XBL, phat with LT 3.0, played Halo early, so going on live would be an instand ban, also with a faked 320 GB harddrive
PS3: Untouched 160 GB Slim, 60 GB Fat with latest Rogero and 160 GB internal harddrive.
PSVita: hardly ever play it
GameCube: Black with a Viper chip installed. With gameboy player. Trying to get a Wavebird controller.

That's what I thought, but I have a friend that swears he did this and it worked. He says he was on 3.73 and when he swapped his hard drive it prompted him to update and he used a usb thumb drive with 3.55 on it to install 3.55.

But I figured he was full of "you know what", and I dismissed it. I asked him to prove it to me but he was only full of excuses.

Anyway, thanks for the info.

Some firmware stuff is installed on the hdd, but it's also on the chip, so you cannot just put in a new hdd and expect to install.

If you do try the PS3 will show a message saying it'll need to be 3.73 or higher pup on the memory stick, or whichever firmware the PS3 has on it currently.

So the only way atm is to use a downgrader.

Since I havent used a dongle is such a long time I thought the e3flasher and progskeet and teensy were the only ones, but I paid a visit to ps3yes website, since I have a ps3yes dongle, and it supports downgrading as well, only the pro dongle though.
So you may want to look up which older dongles support downgrading as well, cos a lot of people wont need them or use them so you might be able to find a cheap one on ebay.
I think these old ones didnt come with the blue ray fix, so if you do use them you'll have to run the fixes after as well.
