Does any one know what the firmware version on the basic 160 gB slim ps3 is? I've Google's this but most posts are at least 2 months old. I was hoping to snag one under 3.56. Do I have pretty good chances if I pick 9ne up at Walmart, or is it too late for this?
I don't live in the us but I just spent about a week running around the gaming and department stores in the hope of snagging a 3.55 or less. Despite all the efforts I put in with a wide spectrum of underpaid salespeople I could not get any of em to agree to let me "take the thing outta the box, plug it into a TV just to check to make sure the unit was compatible with my existing system".
Most were too uninformed about what they were selling to countenence such a thing. There were a couple of Sony/Copywrong Cops. Where do chain stores find these people, or have we, the pain in the a.. public, conditioned em?
Some of the boxes were telling- one store had a few boxes with a sticker saying 'released on 23rd september' I was gonna grab it but the sales assistant had been stubbornly adamant about my not 'checking the system out' and her store was charging much more than others for 160's - I coulda bought a 320 up teh street for less. The date was prbably referring to the release date of the 160 which was 23 sept 2009 and didn't indicate the date of manufacture - except that newer iterations didn't have the release date on em so thinkin about it the console was prolly ancient - hence the high price too.
Anyway in the end I figgered to just have a punt and went to this country's equivalent of a Walmart where they were puhing out mobs of 320's with two new games (all 3.60 games) for lessn $50 more than a 160gig. On sunday 12 June (2 days ago) I bouught it took it home telling myself that it was surely gonna be 3.56 or worse but found it was 3.40 when I plugged it in - yeehaa yahoo!
The bulk discounters buy their stuff in special production runs from big orders so combine that with the bad holiday season turnover last xmas , you've gotta think most walmarts still have thousands of 160 gig consoles to get rid of. Sony can offer all the great deals it likes on recent 320's and suck in teh average punter, but since they haven't recalled all the 160's in the end all that has done is prolong the shelf life of pre 3.56 160 consoles.
It is a gamble though all you can do is relax and hope for the best; convincing yerself that you can still use a 3.60 console if that is what life's lottery throws at ya.
It's all about luck, most of the pre 3.56 console have probably gone by now. So you have a couple of options:
1) Buy a 2nd hand one you know will be pre3.56
2) Buy a new one and hopefully it will be pre3.56
3) Buy a new one and if it's post 3.56 return it and say you do not agree with the eula agreement so want a refund. (best done at a walkmart or another large chain of stores rather than a small privately owned store)
It really is a lottery right now I guess, if you are lucky you'll get a pre3.56

Thanks
i believe the 3.56fw came out around mid January, so it seems unlikely that you will find a console that has been in stock for more than 5 months. you should go to second hand stores, your best chance to find one.
