i'm thinking of purchasing a ps3 from a friend of a friend. The owner says that it plays
perfectly, is backward compatible, with a 80gb slot. I'm looking to get this aa a birthday present for my nephew. I would like to jailbreak it for him as well. My problem/question is this, the owner says he doesn't know the firmware of the machine since it has no hdd in it to see. My question is there any way you can find out the firmware of the machine without putting in a hdd? He claims he's had the machine since early 2009 (If that helps any)

if hdd is missing you have to put one to see what firmware it will ask to install... you can also try recovery mode and pick install firmware it will also tell what firmware it is there ..... 2009 models usually have it under 3.55
