Whats up guys?
I'm new to PS3 modding, but not new to modding by any means. I spend a LOT of time with 360 & Wii modding. Also, you can trace my roots back to the PS1/Saturn days. Anyway, I just recently picked up my 1st PS3 a few days ago and put kmeaw Custom 3.55 firmware onto it. After that, I installed a few packages to try. Rogero Manager v8.2 is what I installed to test running a game from the hard drive. Haze is the game I copied to the internal HDD, because the moment it is the only PS3 game I own (came with the PS3). Rogero Manager (and the other backup managers I tried) copy the game successfully, but won't run it off the HDD (when game is launched, it just goes straight back to the PS3 dashboard).
What I need to know is if there is a certain procedure to running games off the HDD, or is the a certain combination of CFW & PKGs that work together? I tried Waninkoko's Custom 3.55 firmware with the same result.

Download the lvl 2 pkg. Run it before running multiman. Depending on the backup manager and the version, you may need the lvl 2 pkg. It must be run every time you turn on the PS3 or games can not be played from hdd. Multiman picks up the game in your disc drive, the games on your internal hdd and the games on any external hdds. You don't need a disc in the drive for most games. Once you select the game in the backup manager, you can just go to game archive and play it from hdd without any game or you can just put in any game and fool the ps3 into thinking the game you want to play is the one in the blu ray drive. Basically, run lvl 2 pkg, start manager, select game from either external or internal hdd, go to game disc on dashboard (it should say the name of selected game). Either that or you can go to game archive thing and play game from that (though must be selected in backup manager first). I've never used Rogero Manager but its meant to be good. The only games I've played from hdd so far are Infamous, Fifa 11 and UFC 2009. All run flawlessly.

Thanks. I understand how the launcher works and where it'll launch games from. It works just like 360 & Wii launchers, but are you saying lv2 pkg has to be launched every time you launch Multiman (or any other launcher)? If so, someone should write a script or integrate lv2 into a launcher to alleviate that issue. (I'm not complaining, I'm just saying).

I dont use Rogero Manager so cant comment on that. Going back to the xmb is normal, as most backup mangers are set to use a disk as default, though some games do require a disc in the drive. Because of that I prefer to always have a disc in the drive as that setup is more convenient.
You dont need to run lvl2/pkg at all (again not sure with Rogero Manager), I use multiman and it works fine. note that is you decide to use multiman you also need bdemu/pkg in order for it to run backups.
So just load multiman, select game, goto disc icon which now should have the title of teh game you selected and run.

It just has to be run every time you turn on the PS3, not every time you want to use the backup manager. Some managers have it integrated. This site has a lot of them: www.ps3hacks.com. The multiman version I downloaded was supposed to have it integrated but games wouldn't appear on the dashboard unless I ran lvl 2 pkg beforehand. I hope there's a way to play the encrypted 3.6 games soon.

I'm having trouble with the lv2.pkg. Whenever I try to run it, I always get:
"An error occurred during the install operation (80029564)"
I also tried using the bdemu/pkg to use multiMAN as Bigo93 suggested. No luck at all.
I've tried about 5 different backup loaders. With every single backup loader I've tried, it always reboots to the PS3 dashboard. I'v installed 7 games using those various backup loaders, they just won't launch.

That happened to me when trying to install Rogero Manager and that's why I installed multiman instead. I kept getting that error. So when you go to install packages and select the lvl2.pkg, it doesn't work?
I'm also on kmeaw btw. I've no idea why that problem happens

I've never used the lvl2 package. Multiman gives you all that you need. When I installed multiman, I ran the BDEMU pkg to enable BD emulation. But you only need to run it once.
The error you are getting is due to the fact that the package is not made to run on your CFW. The 2 major firmwares are kmeaw and wutangrza/geohot (WT/GH). Winankoko took a lot of heat because his first firmware bricked many PS3's. Most packages run on kmeaw or WT/GH. When Dean releases multiman, he includes the pkg that will run on kmeaw and also the one that will run on WT/GH. BDEMU.pkg also has 2 versions.
When using multiman, I believe you need a retail game disc in the drive. There may be an option to play discless, but I never cared to look into it. As bigo93 said, once you run the game from multiman, it will take back you to the XMB. From there, you can go to the game disc icon and it will have changed to the game you selected.
It's also possible that a game may not be able to run from the internal HDD. If it can fit on an external FAT32 drive without having to split files, there is a very good chance that multiman will be able to play it from the external by using the BD emulation. I had a lot of games that would crash on me until I moved them to an external drive and used multiman. When booting those games up, you would hold "select" and press "X"
If I were you, I would get either kmeaw or WT/GH firmware running. Then stick with multiman only. It will do everything you want. Dean is extremely active in updating it constantly, with awesome improvements. It will be all that you need. Plus it looks really slick with lots of options for themes. The new media cabinet theme is incredible:

EDIT: - forgot to mention rebug CFW as another option.

I'm on kmeaw and my multiman must be an earlier version as it requires me to run the lvl2.pkg. It does support discless gaming. I did it with both Infamous and Fifa 11. Though it is better to put a disc in the drive and unless your blu ray drive is broken, there is no advantage to using it.

Thanks, hadn't noticed that before. Works fine now.
