Every search says to format the USB HDD to FAT2. But all of those posts are from 2008 and older (before jailbreaking). I want to know if MultiMAN or some app can read the drive in NTFS or some other format?

that is not completely correct. multiman is able to read a ntfs partition - if you can get that to work -, so it can read games of a ntfs partition. it just can't write to a ntfs partition (which off course is no biggy, since for playing a game only data is read of the drive. nothing is written to it). but getting a ntfs partition to work under multiman is not as easy as plugging in the drive, you need to edit a config file with the correct data.

What he said is correct, you can only copy games from the ntfs drive (if you can get it mounted) and thats it, no launching games saved on a ntfs drive.
Sucks that stupid sony didn't add support for other formats like ext2/3/4 or even hfs+ or exfat.
Wish we could format an external drive to the ps3's filesystem like you can with the wii. Would make things much easier.

An internal 500GB is cheaper, faster, and more compatible than an external 500GB. There are only two reasons to use an external:
1.) You have so many games that they won't all fit on a 1TB internal
2.) Your PS3 bluray drive is dead and you don't want to use FTP for game transfers.
External PS3-FS support might help with item #1, but there are enough games that already work on external drives that this wouldn't have much affect (and almost no one has that many games anyway). It would totally kill item #2 as you would be forced to use FTP.
