Can (for instance) Mortal Kombat be played from custom firmware 3.55 by copying it to the HDD, and deleting the system update from the game's directory? Or is there some other way to play some of the newer games? Some kind of standard workaround?

you can delete the system update folder all together, i always do that. in that way, you can not accidentally kill you jailbroken ps3. i know multiman patches the sfo file automatically, so it sets it from 3,56 to 3,55. but i am not sure IF you also need a patched eboot for that to work (i believe mk9 needs a patch to work, besides the fatality patch). this method works for games that uses the old keys, that are known. for games that are patched with new keys that are not publicly known, the above method does not work. so games that run on higher fw. with known keys will work with patching or altering the sfo file (which multiman does on its on), games with higher fw and new keys cannot be patched and will not run (like the latest killzone 3 update, that uses the new 3,60 keys. although killzone 3 itself runs on cfw3,55, after this update the game will not run anymore due to the new keys). i believe this is the biggest problem with cfw right now, if new games will utilize the new unknown key, they will not run on cfw that can only decrypt the old known private keys. when game developers will use the new keys, well.... hopefully there is new solution then. perhaps qa flagging, it seems promising (but MS also did a good job of patching the kernel exploit, after which no exploit has been discovered or made public. so who knows, perhaps cfw. 3,55 is all that there is and will be for homebrew on the ps.
