Well we can't always print bad news, even tho it seem like Sony was winnning a few rounds today, a new group called "anonymous" decided to fight back the big advancing war crabs with a FileSystem Library System that allows homebrew PS3 authors to add NTFS support to their apps along with other great file system goodies!

I?m out of town leaving me PS3-less, so I?m unable to test this? This being a library, PlayStation File System Libraries ? libpfsm, that you can use when building your homebrew projects, i.e.) Gaia Manager. And the Gaia Manager source is included and comes pre-modified as an example adding NTFS (libpfsm) support. You just need to build it now and I?m sure someone?ll do that real soon.

What does PlayStation File System Libraries feature?

* Support for multiple simultaneously connected devices.
* Hot swapping of devices.
* Support for multiple partitions (with different FS).
* NTFS support
o Alternate data streams
o Sparse files
o File compression
o B+ trees directory
* FAT support
o FAT12, FAT16, FAT32
o Long file names (VFAT)

Writing to NTFS formatted volumes is not supported and not planned.

Check the README for everything else.

Thanks to? I?ll never tell. The author wishes to remain anonymous. Cheers!
UPDATE:

Don't go re-formatting your external USB hard drives just let, even tho Gaia Manager is included with NTFS support, it does not give you 100% way to run those 4gb+ games, this library also has to be included in a new CFW for your PS3 console to give the game read support during game play, but it does allow you to directly backup those large games to your external HDD, and directly copy them from external HDD to internal to play them!

It is a great first step, so stay tuned to PSX-SCENE to watch the ever-expanding PS3 scene action unfold!

Our thanks to manster for being the first of dozen news submits!

This is some really cool news, I won't use it back just wanted to forward it. Finally good news.

Personally I'm just hoping to see mkv playback capability added and a better web browser with full wide screen support.

UPDATE
For those wondering how this works, don?t bother this is really for devs/homebrew devs. The libraries have to be implemented in future CFW?s which would give you the ability to play games with files 4gb+ (only works atm with HOMEBREW meaning while your playing a game this does not work). Hang tight, we will report to you on latest updates to your favorite firmwares/BMs.

Ill second that, all im after is MKV and NTFS for having a big drive full of my favourite movies, Bluray rips rather than xvid files or having to convert MKVs to mpg and split them.

Yeah for games to work the file system would have to be inserted into the firmware instead of the backup manager. But until that happens it is still good news for backup movies.

multiMAN backup manager already has NTFS implemented, no need for CFW.

Yeah but it will not play from ntfs drive only copy from it.

Is still good though. For the time being. No longer need to rip the movie then convert to avchd to make it work with fat32. Just rip it to ntfs drive then copy to internal hdd on ps3.

My grandson wants to watch despicable me about 3 or 4 times a week. It is now on our ps3 with no quality loss.

Its only in early stages, hopefully Dean the creator of multiMAN and the creators of the driver, manage to get write access for NTFS, they also plan ext2 and ext 3 support, then all that is needed is MKV support.

Awesome movie, i have lost count the amount of times the daughters have watched it, the short episodes of Despicable Me are also good and quite funny.
