Hi, I recently took my PS3 apart in order to install this 1TB hd (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152242). Sadly, it doesn't quite fit the form factor, so I took the PS3 apart in order to remove the hard drive cage.
Right now, everything is back together and working fine with the exception of the blue ray player (it had a slight piece of the ribbon nicked, I'll fix it in the morning), the PS3 turns on and recognizes the HD and everything, however with a network cable in, it can't detect it, AND it fails to detect any wireless hotspot.
If it were one or the other, I'd have a fairly clear idea where to look, but with BOTH not working, I'm a bit stumped. Any help??

Also of note: If I go to connection setting, and hit Easy Method, it hangs on Checking Network Configuration indefinitey...
EDIT: Hmmm, also, the controller doesn't work unless plugged in. I assumed it was dead. So, all communications are shot with the PS3. Where do I look to fix that?? Hmmm...

if i were you
i would open it back up
remove the hard drive and try it
if you are lucky maybe it is just a pressure issue
or maybe you forgot to hook something up
lets get this thing working

Unfortunately, it's not a pressure issue. The cage has been removed, and nothing is pressing on anything else. And everything is hooked up. I've taken it apart and put it back about 4 or 5 times now...
Thanks for the quick reply though! I'm slowly starting to get the feeling that I'm fucked, but I'm not going to go down without a solid fight... ;)
Any more help would be appreciated!
EDIT: I actually found a ribbon cable that the locking pin doesn't seem to work in. Due to it's location, I can't keep it in place and put it all back together. I'll have to go get some electrical tape and see if this fixes it.

I've figured it out, and I wanted to write it in here just in case anyone in the future has a similar problem and finds this thread. A mod can close this now. Thank you.
For the record, I'd opened an original fat 80 gig machine, with wireless and everything. The wireless, bluetooth, and wired internet are controlled by a separate chip on the FRONT LEFT side of the motherboard. The ribbon that reaches through the mobo encasing provides the power to that chip. What tricked me was the way that the riboon is inserted into the motherboard. Instead of being of going parralel to the mobo, it enters PERPENDICULAR to the mobo!!
If you look closely at the ribbon that connects the two, and follow it's shape, you'll quickly see how it is inserted, I'm just an idiot. ;)

Even though you figured it out I spent 10 mins tossing this together to help anyone who also comes to this thread wondering what is up after they re assemble their ps3 and lose all BT/WiFi/controller functionality.
Right after opening the system you will see something like this.
(The actual card reader will be attached to the upper case cover, but I have mine just placed in there for now lol. only 60 GB and 80 GB originals will have this there)
The culprit in question is actually under my card read so lets move that aside.
(More so you will see an image like this if your card reader is still attached to the case or you have a non card reader model.)
The {{{BT/WiFi connectivity unit}}} has a small black wire going into the center of it, and a ribbon cable to the right of it. The ribbon cable is usually your problem. Make sure that ribbon cable is secured into the mainboard(motherboard) and this specific piece I have pointed too. A majority of the time this ribbon cable is unsecured and is what is causing the major wireless connectivity issues....
But lets say that is hooked up and you still have issues... Lets follow the black wire and see where that leads us.
As you can see under the BD drive that small black wire (from the BT/WiFi connectivity unit) is attached to an antenna in the back of the unit. If there is any fray or damage to this wire you will have to get some 20 gauge wire and re wire it yourself. Most of the time this wire is over looked and it destroyed in some way. Causing BT/WiFi and your BT controller functionality to be gone.
In the last photo I am just going to show a close up of the antenna... If the antenna mainboard (the green part) is tinted yellow it may of over heated and be dead (almost never happens). Replacing the part will set you back a few bucks but its worth it to get your ps3 wirelessly working again. You can also see in the picture to the left of the black object on the BT antenna it has some yellow tinting. It at one point was too hot and I had to replace the capacitor for it to work again.
Thats pretty much it. Basically if your ps3 freezes when you try to connect to wifi, your controllers only work when plugged in or BT headsets won't sync/ accessing the BT sync menu causes a crash. Just use this little guide to get you back on track and to point out the two parts that need closer attention.

That is just the WiFi antenna; not the bluetooth. I completely removed that from my 40GB because I don't use WiFi (and because I damaged the wire going to it), and everything bluetooth still works fine...no issues with wired network connections either.

Seconded, KillerBug. That's solely for wireless. Mine broke too. Bluetooth for the controllers work fine still.
Thanks for the post Kmk! I was debating going through and taking pictures myself, but I figured I'd wait and see if anyone else asked for help!
For me, the problem was that ribbon cable to the right that you mentioned.

The main reason I thought it was for both was I have a lot of cases locally that when the wire was frayed/or that part is taken out it would kill both. If it is just for wireless maybe that part dying caused the other part too malfunction as well. Could be a grounding issue as that wifi is grounded with a screw.
This is only on BC models and the first 40 gig version though. I don't recall the second 40/80 gigs generation having the same problem after its removed.

IF you look closely at that wire, it is actually two wires. If that wire gets damaged, it shorts to ground, even if you wrap it in tape, and that causes other problems.

Wow. Glad I didn't break that. ;)
While we're on a hardware subject, does anyone know a place to get thouse two smaller ribbon cables that attach on the underside of the blue ray drive?? Not the data cable, but the other two??

DigiKey probably has that cable...count the connectors, measure the length, and measure the width of the end and I'll try to point you towards a cable.

Killerbug, I'd love you forever if you could help me with the final piece. I'm ordering this http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?vendor=0&keywords=WM10214-ND and the 19 pin version. The only thing I need now is that long red and black cable that go to the upper left. The cables snapped out of the adapter end, and they're so freaking tiny I have no idea what they are!!!
Seriously, it's the last thing I need! If you could help me find it, you can have my first born child!

Glad you got it fixed! It's nice to know that someone found the thread for help!
Also- about my broken cables, I got them on eBay, mailed, for approximately 6 dollars. So cheers all around then.

I'm so happy I found this thread I thought I was screwed, I just need to know the exact location of the wire I know it's not the one in the pics above. I remember the perpendicular wire but that was the card reader.
