Can any Blu Ray drive from any model PS3 be used as a replacement to a dead one? For example, can I use a Blu Ray drive from a slim PS3 to replace the Blu Ray drive of a FAT version PS3?

no, you must get the exact same one you are going to replace or you run the risk of frying the motherboard.
