Was buying this used PlayStation three a bad idea?

A few days ago I purchased a used PlayStation three with custom firmware on it. I could not see it at the time but now that I have the system in my room where the lighting is better I realize that the system looks sort of dirty and has several scratches across the top. Also, the guy told me when he brought the PlayStation three over they had a lens issue and the lands issue had to be repaired.
I know it is impossible to say for sure but, I'm wondering if I made a bad deal. Are the PS3 is generally as problematic as the Xboxes have been? Is the lens issue something that is likely to be a reoccurring?

Guessing it is a phat model. I would be surprised to find one that isnt scratched, they get scratched very easily.
Does it look dusty? If so hopefully it's cos they havent play with it for a while and gathered dust.
If not then most likely they kept it in a badly ventilated area and most likely has suffered one or more ylod, meaning htey have probably done the heat gun fix a couple times to fix it.
Lenses are known to go on older models, not as much on newer ones I think.
Cant really comment on it much more, you really should have asked the seller all the necessary questions before buying.
You should have found out if it had been opened before - has the warranty sticker been removed (even if it looks like it hasnt a little heat removes it without revealing the void message)
You should have asked if it suffered from any ylod or other problems, and if so how they fixed it.
Anything been replaced like you said lens, psu, drive etc.
If they did the heatgun fix, what brand thermal paste they used, if they used a cheap on your PS3 will ylod a lot faster again.
If you are ok with opening a PS3 open it and check for dust in the heatsink and fan, if there is any dust clean it. If you dont want to open it, get a vacuum and with the narrow hose attachment go around all the vents to try and suck out any dust bunnies.
After than, if you have any air duster spray, use that to blow dust out from the nooks and crannies, then vacuum again.
If you find they used cheap thermal paste, you want the good stuff like arctic silver at least, then I recommend opening the PS3 fully. There is a full video guide online, very easy to follow if you watch it carefully and are comfortable with opening electronic equipment.
So I would first removed the cheap paste and replace it with the arctic silver.
I would also buy some rubber/silicon pads which you can then stick under the psu and bluray drive, so that it lifts them above the heatsink, I hear the psu sit on top of the heatsink adding more heat to it which speed up the chances of a ylod.
Buy and install one of killerbugs fan controllers, this is especially is you have a launch console - launch consoles have 4 usb ports on the front, memory card readers and plays ps2 games.

Thanks for the advice. Obviously there were a few questions that I should've asked but did not. I'm glad to hear that the fat models scratch a little bit more than the other ones.
I know that it did not have the yellow light of death; the only problem was one with the lens. Opening the system would be rather difficult for me. But I will definitely cleanup difference with a vacuum attachment. And give the system a good once over with a can of compressed air.
I only have two USB ports on the front. So, I'm assuming that I have an older model. Are the models like my substantially less susceptible to the yellow light of death?

2 usb ports mean you have the 2nd version console or later. You do have a phat model right? If the surface shiny or textured? shiny=phat, textured=slim
All models can get the ylod if not looked after properly, phat models are more prone to overheating though.
The best way to clean a PS3 is to open it to make sure you removed all the dust. But vacuuming and using an can of compressed air will help. Make sure to use the straw with the can and just push it through the vent holes at several places, the back vents go mainly into the heatsink and fan so you should be able to push the straw most of the way in.

Two USB ports means it is the 3rd or 4th model version, the one that either came with a 40 GB harddrive or an 80 GB harddrive originally. First model was the one coming with 20 GB, but that is realy rare, second was the one with 60 GB. The first two models also were the ones with backwards compatibility. The chance of getting a ylod should be lower on the 80 GB model, because Sony changed some things. If you want to help preventing ylod and have to open the case because of the lens anyways you can drill a few holes into the case over the fan, giving it more air.
The funny thing is, on an 80 GB model the PSU gets a lot hotter than on a 60 GB model, because Sony changed the PSU metal case.
Xbox 360: Slim untouched with a faked 320 GB harddrive for XBL, phat with LT 3.0, played Halo early, so going on live would be an instand ban, also with a faked 320 GB harddrive
PS3: Untouched 160 GB Slim, 60 GB Fat with latest Rogero and 160 GB internal harddrive.
PSVita: hardly ever play it
GameCube: Black with a Viper chip installed. With gameboy player. Trying to get a Wavebird controller.

I'm not sure what hard drive originally came with the system, I know that it now has a 160 GB hard drive. I I have cerebral palsy so working on things with my hands is rather difficult sometimes. The lens issue was already fixed by someone else so I will not be opening the case if I can avoid it.
Are there any other easy suggestions that I can apply without opening the case or modifying the hardware, that will make a reasonable difference in the life of the system?

Clean it up, make sure it is in an open place so it gets enough fresh air, I think that's about all you can do without opening the case. I'd say you have a 50/50 chance of not getting a ylod, same as all other PS3 owners.
