Do I need to have one in order to play backed up games once I've jailbroken my system, or will the dongle/custom firmware suffice? I've read a lot about various backup managers and Multiman seems to be the one to go for, but I still don't exactly know what it does.

I'm pretty paranoid about accidentally updating my PS3 so I've not connected my PS3 to the Internet at all - will that hurt the functionality of the backup manager? According to the guides and tutorials you need to connect to the Internet to downloaded updates of games...is there a way to do that manually via the PC? (So I can just transfer the files to the PS3 later.)

I'm sorry if these questions seem n00by, but I haven't been able to find the answers yet, so I thought I'd ask here. Hope you can help!

Well multiman is the most popular due to being the most updated and feature-filled manager there is.
Basic managers can allow you to backup your original games to either your internal or external hard drive, and then also allow you to run the game from the hdd rather than the disc, those some games still require any ps3 game disc to be in the drive.
Multiman does that and so much more. It has in-built emulators, has Showtime player built into it, you will just have to install it and see really.

And you can download game updates using several programs like this one http://ps3.dashhacks.com/downloads/awesome-update-finder-02
you need the game's catalogue number in order to download the correct update, eg US/EU/JP etc, then copy to a usb stick or drive then install from install package menu.

You dont need to have the ps3 connected to the internet, unless you want to use a program like xlink kai, in which case be careful not to update past 3.55 and you will want to disable the Automatic Update feature in the PS3 settings.

multiman also requires bdemu2.pkg in order to run some features.

Thanks for the reply, it really cleared up a lot of stuff! :) I'm going to download Multiman and see what I can do with it.

BTW, what is bdemu2.pkg?

Bluray Disc Emulator. It emulates the PS3's disc drive. Makes the console think that the game you selected with your backup manager is in the disc drive although it's not.

And is needed to run some of the feastures in multiman, such as playing the backups. If its not installed you can backup your games but not play them and a couple other features will not work.
