Which is better at playing backups? Cobra or True Blue?

I was thinking of buying Cobra for playing backups from an external hard drive (less damage to the discs), and I was wondering if Cobra would be better than True Blue? Also, out of curiosity, do the newer PS3s (160-320 GB) got firmware that is at or below 3.55? I'm asking this because I'm considering buying a 60 GB PS3 from e-bay that has 3.41 firmware, and upgrading that firmware to 3.55.
