Hi, I dont really use the Nintendo Wii that we have in the house...its for the kids!
A friend of mine got it 'chipped' 2 years ago, and he taught me how to d/l & burn games onto DVD using Imgburn software.....no idea what kind of chip is inside, but I do know it cost about £70 to do in 2008
The kids have now noticed that the Wii no longer plays any of the copied games or backed up games, or any of the new ones Ive tried recently, but it has NO problems with any of the original Wii games that they have.
I'm not very technical minded so dont really no what to do to resolve this.
All I know it was chipped about 2 years ago; its connected to our wireless internet; the Wii is about 4 years old (I am the only owner) & working absolutely fine (apart from not playing the copied discs)
Your advice / suggestions are most welcome. I'll do my best to provide you with more details should you require them.
Thanks

well i know nothing about hard chip (which you have) but i know you can softmod with the aid of a game, its pretty straight forward do some reading up and always double read then triple read to make sure your taking it in. google wii softmod 4.3e using modmii. if your scared of doing it and you live near me i will gladly do it for free ( or a few tinnies if you want to say thanks :)) let me know how ya get on

Well, no offense but if you have no clue as to what the OP is asking, nor a solution, try not to muddy the waters with a response that is totally off-topic. Question: Are all of your back-ups E or U versions? The chip should still work with FW4.3 update but you lose the ability to play out of region games. If the Wii was working before the update and then not working "properly" after the update then it is likely a software problem, i.e. the disc/game version. Nintendo has yet to provide an update that fries, breaks, or otherwise renders dysfunctional, permanently a mod chip. If you are sure the discs are from your region the next ste is to open the Wii and check the chip manufacturer/version. You may need a mod chip firmware update, many can be done from a DVD. SO first check the disc version. That's where I would begin. ---Chikn

well no offence to you but this happened to my mate, it was hard chipped and he updated and his games would no longer work only his originals, so i softmoded it for him and then he could play his back ups again, Now if thats not a solution on how to get his games working then i am sorry for my pointless suggestion :S

Thanks - seems like a lot to take in, but I'll attempt this over the weekend & report back.
Just 2 questions. Do I need a special tool to open up the Wii, and where is the chip (what does it look like?)
Thanks again

To disassemble you will need a tri-wing screw driver and a very small phillips head screwdriver. You can Google a disassemble guide, there are many in html, pdf, and on youtube. The chip will be conspicuous, sitting on the PCB on the back of the DVD drive, you can't miss it. As far as the tri-wing, you might be ablt to use a small phillips head screwdriver and angle it somewhat, but you run the risk of stripping the screw heads.

This is retarded. Why tell the guy how to open his wii (basically telling him to screw it up as it seems he knows little of how to do anything with it already). Instead of following tongs advice and telling how to softmod it to get his games working (Which if I am not wrong was the main point for him making this topic).
@ Nini_Wii I suggest you don't even bother listen Chikn_Ltl or else you might end up screwing your wii when you open it and won't know how to put it back and just follow this steps... http://www.wiihacks.com/recommended-faqs-guides-tutorials-only/60921-guide-softmod-any-wii.html
It will then softmodd your wii and you can play all your games (original and copies, from all different regions) once again.
Hope this helps :)

Thankyou - will give it a go. Yes you are correct, I wouldnt contemplate opening up the Wii. If I dont know what goes on outside it, I certainly wont have a clue about its inner workings!

Umm, It's actually quite straight forward to disassemble/assemble to Wii: as easy as removing a few screws really. And the point of the OP was to trouble shoot a hard modded Wii that no longer plays games, not "what is the {insert adjective} way to get games working on my Wii?".

It all boils down to this fact: The Wii has been updated to 4.3 and as such the modchip will only respond to backups within the original region of the console, (that is, games with the same region code as the console). nini_wii has not provided any information in regards to the region of his console or the region of the copy games he is using, and until this information is provided, there is no need for him to open up his Wii at this point (Or any other point for that matter).
If the modchip is not working at all, then it's best to leave it alone in it's resting place. It's not worth the hassle or cost to try and restore it (Especially when it's inside a 4.3 console), when the exact same function (As well as many others) can be achieved with an SD Card and some free software. You will never be able to restore a modchip to it's full functionality on a 4.2/4.3 console, so there's no point in bothering with it if it's not working at all. If it's still working to the extent that it will play backups in your region, then you can continue to use it as you would normally, taking care to make sure any games you get are in the correct region.
In short, the Wii categorically does not need to be opened, nothing will accomplished in doing so, either your modchip still has some functionality, or it doesn't, in which case you must softmod to play backups again. Nothing else to be said really, but of course, it's not my decision to make & I'm not going to try and stop anyone from opening their console if they wish to...
