Error after swaping the wii dvd drive

Hi have searched the web and found out you can easily swap the dvd drive on a wii as i ve got 1 that no longer accepts the dvd i orderded one and have just fitted it to a un modded wii version 3.1e
the problom i get is when trying to read the disc i get the error message =
An error has ocured. press the eject button and remove the disc. then turn the wii console of and refer to the wii iperations manual for help.
i did get games to load for a short time by slaking of the 4 screws that hold the dvd drive to the wii off but when i built it back up i got the message again so i have now striped it back down and I still get the error message
thanks for any help any of you guys can give me in advance

Double check your brown flat ribbon connections. Use your finger nail on the ridge were the flexi plastic meets the ribbon. Pull it tight and level to the connector (try not to pull too hard or you could dislodge the connector - disaster!. Look carefully for any signs that the ribbon has been damaged.If that doesn't cure it then try the connection on the motherboard. That is going to be a pain because you have to strip the Wii down to the bones. If all this fails buying a new ribbon may cure it. Best of luck.

Thanks for info ribbon looks ok and ive striped it down to check other end and it all seems ok so it has to be a fault with the ribbon?
or is there anything else it could be ?

It has been my experience that the ribbon is nearly always at fault. Did your original drive give the same error?

No origanal fault was it would not take dvds in it would just grind and make funny noises like the gears were no good.

Then it is still likely to be the ribbon or the connectors. It would be unlikely that the drive controller chip died as you changed drives. You would have to be very unlucky!
Take the ribbon out again. Get a pencil eraser (not a putty one)and gently run it over the two contact ends of the ribbon. This will clean off any oxidation that might be on the ribbon. Make double sure that the ribbon is in the right way round, contact side down. Also the black line drawn on the blue/white flexi plastic is precisely parallel to the connector clip.
If you could borrow a mates Wii that could be useful. You could double check the new drive and ribbon.
They would have to be a very, very good friend to allow you to open up their Wii!

have now brought a ribbon of ebay and fitted it but still gets same error is there anything i can do with the controler board as ive still got the old drive which would not take discs in?
