I am having some issues playing a few games. I'm playing the games from a wbfs formatted drive, and 4.2u. Mario Party 8, and Guitar Hero Warriors of Rock won't load, Call of Duty Black ops starts loading and then freezes at loading screen, New Super Mario Bros Wii freezes during gameplay (usually within 5 minutes). I have no other issues with any other games. If anyone can help with any or all of these games your help will be deeply apppreciated. Thanks....

Call of duty - needs to be started on a cios with a base 57.
Guitar Hero's must be started on a merged 37-38 base (usually cios 223)
Mario party 8 has no issues so suspect bad image.
NSMB depends on which loader you are using and how old it is, old versions needed the correct version of the game (one for disc and one for USB available)

GX - this has been updated a lot lately, but to run Call of Duty you must have at least the v2 release (rev 1037)
Then get modmii (use google to find) this program will allow you to download cios files etc to your pc, put them on the Wii SD card and install them
Ideally you need to install
249 rev 21d2x base 56
250 rev 21d2x base 57 (needed to run Black ops and Sims 3)
222 hermes rev 5.1 base 38
223 hermes rev 4 base 37 merged 38 (Needed for Guitar Hero warriors)
224 Hermes rev 5.1 base 57 (alt to run Black Ops)
Install them using wad manager 1.7 or the modmii installer.

forget modmii and use dop-mii v15 to update your system IOSes under 200 with the latest non stubbed version.
then use cIOSX_rev21 installer to install base 57 to IOS249 and base 56 to IOS248.
and ditch usb loader gx and use configurable usb loader v65. majority of my games play under IOS249 base 57, no tweaks. otherwise, games are switched to IOS248 or IOS250.

got a whole lot more to list . . .

configurable usb loader offers much better game and hardware compatability. i don't care about how GX looks; all i need is coverflow and not some wii menu clone to choose a game. choose a game cover, and either play it or go back to the game list.
function over form.

Then try v2 or the later beta versions of GX and give an honest answer.
Gx has had huge improvements, you can plug the USB into either slot (or one HDD in each - this option is one HDD, or the other, switched by the loader not both at the same time) USB compatibility is equal and using 222v5.1 base 38 the later revisions have exceeded the compatibility on CFG.
I have used both extensively and have taken part in the Beta trials of GX (the kids insist on GX as the interface is far more intuative and easier to use for them)
Which is best is now down to which GUI you prefer - nothing more, apart from 1 game (Rugby) which plays on CFG but only the quick game plays on GX all other games play on both perfectly.

yes, i have used the new GX 2.0 just because. and still, it does not beat configurable usb loader in simplicity and performance. hardware compatability finally detects my custom drive, but the GUI is still the same clunky wii menu clone, and the fluidity of the wiimote hasn't changed at all.
the cover wheel was a letdown because you can't point the wiimote to the left or right to scroll between the games. all i have to do in configurable is point the screen to the left or right to scroll between the two rows of game covers; smooth and fluid. also, there's no excessive buttons. ie, the settings button, layout buttons, power off button, etc. it's just two rows of game covers and the current time; simple and straightforward. click on a cover once, and it brings up the game description. either hit A again to play, or B to go back to the game covers.
and why should i switch to IOS222? IOS249 with base 57 will deal with practically all games right away. when people complained that they couldn't get metroid: other m working, i was strolling along. monster hunter tri online? IOS248 with base 56. wiispeak works, and the lag is gone in a 4 person quest. the leaked PAL NSMBwii from a year and a half ago? ran completely fine with the dated cIOS38_rev15/16/17 and configurable usb loader. and when the US version came out, erased the PAL version and ripped my original copy. guess what, still worked. the only reason i have hermes 5.1 IOSes installed is for fallback, but since IOS248/249/250 always worked, there was no need to switch.

Just follow the Modmii guide, ignoring the parts that are already done (Homebrew etc)

I used the modmii program. it works great. its much easier to get the files you need that way. I installed those 5 cios files. my guitar hero game works now but black ops still doesn't work. I used multi mod manager to install these files. wad manager 1.7 was getting error -1 when I was trying to install files. my mario party 8 doesn't wrk still so imma get a new one & new super mario bros still freezes. so someone posted above that there were 2 versions of the game. could that be the reason my super mario bros doesn't wrk?

forget modmii and MMM. those aren't recommended to use; search wiihacks forum and see the problems those have. dop-mii v15 and the cIOSX_rev21 installer is what you want to use. no middleman, just straight from the original source. and if wadmanager is giving you errors, install IOS236 and run wadmanager with that IOS.
start dop-mii, and install the latest, non-stubbed versions for all the IOS under 200. exit, then run cIOSX_rev21 installer. install base 56 to IOS248, base 57 to IOS249, and base 58 to IOS250. exit, then run configurable usb loader.
i've had MP8 running since the original usb loader 1.0. i'd suggest that you rip it from an original copy, same with NSMBWii. not a downloaded, or backup copy. ORIGINAL copy.

Sorry but where did you get that from, it is highly reccomended on several websites.
I have used it several times and not only does it have no issues, it also downloads everything directly from Nintendo and gives a clear and consise guide in one package - no searching for additional info.
Check out its sticky at gbatemp.net

like i said before, look at wiihacks.
without ANY guide, and some common sense, i can easily softmod any wii with smash stack, hackmii 0.8 installer, IOS236 v5 installer, dop-mii v15, and cIOSX_rev21 installer.
you don't need an all in one softmod package to do the work when you're using the original programs. so what if it's more work? softmodding is not meant to be easily accessible to a complete new person.

Ok
On Wiihacks the program is in the sticky section, the thread was started and is moderated by a member of the Wiihacks Staff. If there were problems it would have been removed. read through the thread lots of satisfied users, as it can also modify and allocate different channels to cios's so it is also useful to more experienced users. As it also updates all your Nintendo IOS's safely it gives a safe update to the latest firmware.
Your other issue seems to be that Noobs should not get a free helping hand to mod the wii but have to "work for it" by finding the right programs themselves, I would rather offer a simple solution that even a noob could follow, an all in one solution that virtually guarentees no bricks.

so, you'd let them easily pirate games? yes, it's the honor system in effect when modding, but let's face it. in this day of age with high speed internet, rental systems, and modern computers, everyone has access to complete games. the best way to prevent this is NOT to have modding easily accessible.
i'd rather have people learn the proper way to mod, and not be 'oh, i can play games on my hard drive without owning a single game with this one program.'

well everyone learns how to do these type of things from someone. that's the beauty of blogs & forums. it makes things easier to learn. I value both opinions though. I will try the dop-mii thing on the next console that I get & see which one is better to use...
