Massive Wii Updating Advice - Softmod + Wiikey

Hello,
I haven't played my Wii in a while, and it's been even longer (at least a year, probably several) since I've performed any updates to it or the software on it. I'd like to update all my homebrew and softmod stuff, for several reasons:
-Some things weren't quite working properly (see below), so I'd like to patch those up
-I'd like to make sure everything is up-to-date for safety and convenience sake
-I'd like to prepare to be able to play the upcoming Zelda: Skyward Sword without issues.
Because I have many different kinds of software and updates to do, and because I've been away from the Wii/modding scene for a long while, I thought it would be helpful to request some advice with how to proceed. There's a lot of different software, terminology, and processes to go through, so it can be a bit overwhelming and confusing. Though I'm quite good with computers, the consequences of failure (bricking the Wii) are quite steep, so I would appreciate some expert help and guidance. Obviously you don't have to spell out every single step for me, but give me enough to go on.
I'll start by describing my Wii, then list specific problems I've been having, and finally what my ultimate goals are.
Wii Description
-My (North American) Wii is running System Menu 3.4U.
-My Wii has the Wiikey 1 installed. I believe the Wiikey firmware is version 1.9s, the update needed for "Super Mario Galaxy" backups. I had to resort to NeoGamma for "New Super Mario Bros." backups.
-I have the Homebrew Channel installed. It is version 1.0.8, with IOS38 v14.25 (not sure what that last bit means, but it's reported in the upper-right corner).
-I also have BootMii installed (though it doesn't quite function properly - see below). Checking the info menu, it reports that it is BootMii v0.9, with Stub v0.9 and Mini v0.9. It reports that I am running SysMenu 3.4U boot1b bootZvZ. This is several years old, so I'm sure it's out of date.
-On the Homebrew Channel I have:
-NeoGamma R8 beta 13
-NeoGamma R9 beta 49 (had to get this newer version a year or two back for Donkey Kong Country Returns backups, I think)
-Gecko OS 1.0.2b (I don't think I ever used this)
-Trucha Bug Restorer v1.0 (used this to install an IOS, but I don't remember the details). The top right corner reports "IOS55 (Rev 4633)"
-Wad-Manager
-DI (not sure what this is - I think it had to do with DVD playing, which is unimportant, since I never ended up using the Wii for that)
-PATCHMII (don't remember what this was for)
-Homebrew Broswer v0.3.6 (updating from within the program fails)
-cIOS45_rev14-Installer
-Various emulators and MPlayer. Minor problem with Snes9XGX - see below.
Problems
-BootMii does not go to the Homebrew Channel when I select that option on startup in the BootMii screen. The screen goes blank (no input to the monitor), but the power remains on. I have to force shut down (hold down the power button for a few seconds). However, it loads the normal system menu just fine.
-I can't play Metroid: Other M - either backups or the original disc (bypassing the system update via NeoGamma). In truth, this is not a HUGE deal, since I've heard bad things about Other M, but it would be nice to fix this or know how to, should the same issue prevent me from enjoying other games in the future.
-After updating Snes9XGX from within the program, it now reports this error upon program startup:
"The current IOS is unsupported.
Functionality and/or stability may be adversely affected."
I'm not sure what this means or what's causing it. The emulator seems to still work fine, but to be safe, I'd like to understand and remove the cause of this problem anyhow.
-As reported above, Homebrew Browser prompts an update when I start the program, but such an update fails.
Goals
-I would like to solve the above listed problems.
-I would like to update my software so I'm running the latest versions (of Homebrew Channel/Browser, BootMii, Emulators, and USB loaders). That way, if I ever have a problem, it will be easier to diagnose and solve with the experts.
-I would like to continue playing backups on my Wii via DVDs. Note that I burn backups to DVDs, not to a hard drive (since I don't have an external hard drive).
-I would like to prepare to be able to play Skyward Sword backups (or at least learn and prepare enough to be able to handle any problems that may arise, as it isn't quite out yet)
-I would like to accomplish these goals without bricking the Wii.
-I would like to accomplish these goals without updating the System Menu (as I understand that this *may* make bricking more likely or affect my Wiikey's ability, while yielding little to no benefits).
-I would like to accomplish these goals without adversely affecting my Wiikey functionality. I can use USB loaders (NeoGamma, etc.) for recent backups, but it's nice to be able to just pop in a disc and rely on the Wiikey, without having to go to Homebrew Channel for the older games (and some newer games which don't seem to be an issue).
So please let me know what the steps necessary to accomplish the above goals are. I understand this will likely be a multi-step process. Feel free to ask any questions, if I have not provided enough information.

Use google and get a program called modmii
Run the wizard on your PC, treat your wii as if it is unhacked.
The program will download everything you need, all cios's and if required will also update the wii to newer firmware (4.1 is best as this was the last true enhancement revision - 4.2 and 4.3 were just to remove and patch exploits for homebrew)
Put the contents of the copy to sd folder to a 1 or 2gb sd card (Sandisk is one of the best)
Follow the generated guide from after installing the homebrew chanel (as you already have this).
Google neogamma and get the latest version if you still want to go down the disk route - cfg and gx loader will run games straight from a hard drive.

I hade the same question. I used ModMii and it worked great. I been Playing Skyward Sword.

Wow. This ModMii program really makes everything easy, doesn't it?
Modding and keeping up-to-date was always such a mess before. First we had to hand-solder chips, then we had to install and keep track of different IOS's for each game. Now it's so painless.
I resolved all my issues in the original post. Now the only problem is ModMii downloads all but 3 of the right cIOSs. That is, it gives me a list of what to install (in the text file) and downloads all but 3 of the right ones. It gives me incorrect versions for those 3.
Now I didn't install the incorrect versions, but I installed all the other corrrect cIOSs. My games seems to all function perfectly anyhow (I didn't even need NeoGamma for my backup of Skyward Sword - just ran it from the normal System Menu), so I'm not going to worry about it.
