I modded my wii around feb 2008 with Wiikey. I have no idea exactly which chip I had installed. I remember doing an update that summer.. I think to "S" or something? I can't be certain.

Today is the first time turning on my Wii since then. I wanted to start playing again and also use it for Netflix. It is trying to update, but I don't want to risk bricking the console.

1. How can I tell what I have installed in there now?

2. What steps would I take to update my wii without adverse effects.

3. What's new since 2008? Any links or info to get me back up and running would be appreciated.

Thanks!

EDIT
Did some more browsing after I posted. I found this post that is exactly what I was looking for.

So no need for the thread -- but if anyone want to confirm that allowing the wii to update firmware is safe, I would appreciate it. I am not looking to play out of region titles. I plan to look into softmodding and homebrew. Any links/advice appreciated.

In that thread it starts by saying, "DO NOT UPGRADE TO 4.3". In another thread by the same guy he also says, "Never Ever Ever Update Your Wii From Nintendo."

How do I know if it is safe to upgrade?

...

I have 3.2u by the way. I'm pretty sure I have Wiikey 1.9s.

Wow that guy never learns - DO NOT UPDATE, anyone who suggests it has no idea at all.

The best option is to go to a softmod solution, the Wiikey and softmod work fine together so it should cause you no issues.

Download a program called Modmii - use the wizard and it will download all the files from Nintendo and install them safely to your current Wii, it will reccomend 4.1 as the desired final firmware - accept this (this is the last time useful features were added) You will need a 1 or 2GB SD card (Use a good make, Sandisk is one of the best for this procedure).

You will get a guide and a folder called COPY TO SD, copy the contents of the folder to the root of your SD card and you are ready to go.

Again - DO NOT UPDATE!!
