Hey guys,

I'm new at this, so bear with me if I've overlooked soemthing simple.

I purchased an external HL-DT-ST DVDROM GDR8082N USB drive. I'm not sure how to check the current firmware. It says the driver version is 5.1.2535.0. Details under properties reads HL-DT-ST&PROD_DVD-ROM GDR8082N&REV_0106.

So I think I have firmware 0106?

In any case, the external drive won't recognize Wii games when I insert them into the drive. I've attempted flashing using the firmware available on the IBM website. However, when the computer boots from the floppy, it won't detect my external USB device and only detects hardwired drives into the IDE.

I'm currently stuck and don't know what to do. Any help would be much appreciated.

It's not the drive.

The Windows OS will NEVER be able to recognize Wii discs unless you are running rawdump, friidump, or that 50 euro software that someone else touts.

Have you even tried running rawdump or friidump yet?

That is your next step and the ONLY way to test your drive.

I have the same slim notebook drive. I am trying to update the firmware to 0L03 (from 0L02) Apparently that is the firmware that works with Wii discs.

I have struck the same hurdle as you, in that when trying to format it does not recognise usb connected drives. I don't suppose you found a solution to this?
