It's been ages since i've used my wii, and lately i've seen that some good games came about, so I decided to give it another try...
I've got a modded wii with the original/initial WiiKey (wiikey 1?)
I'm checking the official wiikey website and i'm seeing that a wiikey2 is now available.
Question is
1) is it possible to play NTSC backups on PAL Wii console via the original wiikey (i've read both yes and nos regarding this matter)
2) where can I get some quick updates of what has been going on regarding what should I update or not? (like safety of updating wii's latest firmware etc etc)
if you update to 4.2 your wiikey 1 will stop acting multi region, you will only be able to play a few own region backups! i would upgrade to a newer chip, wiikey 2,drivechip
yeah 4.2 is the latest firmare update from nintendo and its nasty, its been brought out to try and destoy the hacks amd modds, mainly softmods.
If you update the wii direct this is the firmware your wii would be updated to, this would disrupt your wiikey1(1.9 is the firmware for the wiikey)
yes newer games will need newer firmware and will ask you to update your wii, other option is to use homebrew and use safe updates from Waninkoko.
But if your staying with the drive chips and your getting a newer chip most will not be effected if you update to 4.2
ok - so know i updated my wiikey to 1.9s and my wii is still at 3.1E
what is Waninkoko? i'm google but a non english site shows up :(
can I "choose" a particular version into which i update my wii? (like 4.0) to avoid going to 4.2?
(p.s - my pal wii/wiikey does not play ntsc games at all...should it?)
I also started out with wiikey years ago. I've since completely removed it (just for experiment reasons) and have softmodded with hard drive for loading backups.
In my opinion its the only way to go. I never put the wiikey back in.
For more information just check out larry's guide (always found in the top 15 or so threads)
You can have both hardmod and softmod installed. The hardmod will let you boot backup disc with the normal disc channel. A softmod can use a USB loader and load backup games from a USB Loader and USB harddrive.
In a way you will have the best of both worlds.
Follow the softmod guide in my sig which will softmod your system and let you update to 4.1 firmware.

wow that looks like a lot of work, thought kind interesting idea of loading via usb drive! (might help keep my desk clearer).
i'm gonna start it right away, but will this let me play any type of game? even ntsc games on my pal?
(cause those are the only games i cant play so far...)
