Is it any harder or are there any more risks of messing up any of the newer wii's to mod. I've done it to the older white wii's using the SSB trick. I don't have that wii so I need a new one and would like to get a black or red wii.

it's not any harder, it's just that you can no longer use disc backups anymore
because of the new disc drive that newer wii's have.

It really depends on which firmware the wii has (e.g 3.4 can use Bannerbomb--Easy, whereas 4.3 uses Smash Stack--Not as easy).

I see, I don't use backup discs anyways and the old wii I used had 4.3U when that problem first started. I'm now more concerned with getting the Cios and getting them all right when I do this.

All Wii systems are easy to mod. Firmware 4.2 and below can use bannerbomb where firmware 4.3 uses a game exploit, so the game is needed to exploit and mod the system. There are numerous game exploits out there you can use. So buy/borrow/rent 1 of the games that can exploit the system.

Also as stated the new system drives can not play backup disc. You will need to use a USB loader to play the backups.

HERE is a guide on how to mod a 4.3 and below system.

in my opinion i dont see the point of leaving the wii at such a low FW such as 3.4 when theres softmod methods for FW such as 4.3

Some games won't even boot on 3.4, and plus there is some new features that were added after the fact. 4.3 is easy to mod and gets you current. If you are on 4.2, no sense in updating. I use the indiana jones lego method. Even though I don't even play my wii LOL.
