I will be buying a new Wii in the next week or so for my son. I have a lot of experience modding other systems and I am starting to do my research. My son is very young and I want the system to play backups so I can keep the originals in a safe area. Now with the Modding of the Wii, If I was to buy a Drivekey and open the system and install it, will I be able to play backups without a problem, or will I need to occasionally find a way to "update" this chip?
Aka modding the 360's all was well until wave4 was released and all former work needed to be updated.
Basically I don't want to put this chip in the system if I am risking a week later an update to the games that renders it useless. Also to anyone who is currently using said chip are you able to play online and purchase games from the nintendo online store without an issue?
drivekey would work it you have the D3/D2-nothing V1 drive.
but you may be unlucky and get a wii with the new D3/D2-nothing V2 drive. these wii drives cannot be modchipped to allow games to be played off dvd disc.
the only modchip currently available for the new D3/d2-nothing v2 drives are ones that let you boot games from PC, USB HDD, or SD card aka WiiDrive Emulators.
and if u r going to do that, you might aswell softmod it for free and play games from a usb hdd.
Woah loading from usb HD sounds like a great idea. Is that a possible softmod solution regardless of versions? or is that something specific to a specific version?
Thank you very much for the responses I greatly appreciate it.
just look for one of Larry's guides. You can't go wrong.
Plus to correct you, everything was NOT fine until wave4. There were many times before that where you needed to reflash the xbox 360firmware due to dashboard updates.

Well I didnt need hardware for the 360 is more what I was getting at. If I bought a chip, installed it and a few months later it was useless for new games I would be disappointed, but I would get over it and just upgrade. Just wanted to know what I was getting myself into. Softmod updates wouldn't be an issue, but a $45 chip a few times a year would be a bit of a pain.
http://forums.afterdawn.com/t.cfm/f-154/...2_guide-797772/ Just follow the guide, all you need is here. Then any updating you need to do in future will be somewhere in this forum. Just keep yourself informed by reading all you can. You can't go wrong if you understand how the wii thinks.
good luck.

WARNING: I DON'T KNOW IF cMIOS IS COMPATIBLE WITH LU64, LEH250 OR LAH113 AND ABOVE SYSTEMS. IF ANYONE KNOWS FOR SURE LET ME KNOW AND I WILL REMOVE THIS WARNING.
1) Launch the Homebrew Channel via the Wii channel menu. Select the cMIOS Installer in the Homebrew Channel list. This will start the installer. You need to press A to accept that you have read the disclaimer.
You have 2 options on how to install the cMIOS files (you do not need to do both options!)...
WAD Installation: Google RVL-mios-v8.wad and download it. Then place it in the root of the SD Card. Then chose WAD Instillation option.
Network Installation: At the instillation option screen press right 1 time on the D-pad of the Wiimote. This will download the files via WiFi.
After you have selected the option you want and installed the cMIOS your Wii should reboot to the Wii Channel menu.
Now you can launch the backup Game Cube games from the NeoGamma R6 backup launcher channel in the Wii channel menu.
