Hi All

I haven't used my wii for ages, but now the kids have started to play it i'd like to get some up-to-date games.

I fitted a wiikey years ago when I first got the wii and the last update I did was for mario galaxy I think, I've been having a look around and see that firmware 1.99b seems the latest. I just have a few question to ask before updating.

Wii is running version 3.4E

1. Can I play all the latest games with this update (from dvd)
new super mario
mario galaxy 2

2. Do this update let me boot from usb or would I still have to softmod for this

3. Are there any precaution I need to know before updating.

Thanks

1) Yes updating the wiikey will let you play most games from backup disks.

2) No, you need to softmod to play games over a USB loader.

3) Softmodding really is the way to go. My wii still has an original wiikey but I haven't used a backup disk in over a year. Homebrew loaders let you do everything that modchips ever could and more. Additionally, if you update your wii to firmware 4.2 or later (which is necessary to play recent games unless you softmod) then you will no longer be able to play import games without softmod help. Even with a modchip they will be blocked.

Softmodding is really just a series of steps to get a couple programs and firmware patches onto the wii. Many of these steps have alternatives, meaning that different methods can be used to install them. So there's really only one softmod, but there are many different methods to install it.

Personally I like this guide: http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=171901

It gives you guides on several different exploits and all its steps are simple and easy to follow.

Once you've finished the softmod you can either continue to load games from disks (with a homebrew program like neogamma) or with a USB loader like the Configurable USB Loader that you can get here: http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=147638
