K so I dont know much about this stuff but here goes....
I had my wii soft modded a yr ago. Was told to NEVER update when prompted. So for xmas my son got tony hawk shred with the board. I put the disc in and it wants to update so i removed the disc. Then my bro put the game onto my external hard drive thinking that may work. Well it isnt asking for an update but as soon as I choose the CFG channel where all my wii games are the board and dongle shut off and wont re sync.... AAAAAh i am going crazy! my boy was dying to play but I refuse to ruin mod for this game. Anything I can do?

Update cfg loader to the latest revision. Get modmii (google) and download the latest cios's. d2xv7final base 56 and d2xv7final base 57 modmii will want them into 249 and 250.
Start cfg on 249 and then try the game, if it does not work then start the game under 250.

As your wii has not been modded for a while then you will need to update it (safely) Google Modmii, install the program onto a PC (with wifi access). You will also need an SD card (if there is one in the front of your Wii you can use that).
Run the modmii wizard, answer the questions and it will download everything (all updated genuine nintendo ios's and the updated cios's) It will also generate a step by step guide, you have the homebrew chanel (I presume) so start the guide from after that point, (you may need to run the 236 installer - its on the guide) install all your wads.
Update cfg - delete all old config files as things have changed a lot in the last year
CFG has 2 downloads available mload222 and 249 - get the 249 version.

Ok so I am having alot of trouble here! lol i have version 4.3 if that matters...I have a bunch of homebrew channels that I know nothing about. let see : neogama- tried to load here, but board still shutting off
priiloader-scares me wiiflow-which i don't know what it is. I thought I just needed to get around the update of the system to get board to work right, but putting the game on my harddrive didn't do the trick. the board works and will sync until i click on cfg or homebrew and then shuts off (dongle and board) I contacted activision (didn't tell em of mod of course) and they think it may be a board issue and are sending me a new one.... I tried on my bros wii which is modded just like mine, same thing, yet when I plug in the dongle to my pc it works. I am soooo lost here! I don't wanna mess up the mod but I dont' wanna take the game back! haha I am not a gamer, nor a computer wiz, I just do what i know how to do. lol
I dont really understand how to do the above, as this is not my forte. Do i have to update the mod very often? I had it modded in april of 2011.. everything works fine on it except this darn game! arrrgh

Neogamma - speciallises in running copy discs - no good if the wii is new as it will not read them
Wiiflow - like CFG a USB loader
Priiloader, add on to the system menu to prevent updates and enable region free (wii blocked this at 4.2)
Start cfg, go to the game buy do not start it,
Press 1 to go to options. Change the load cios to 223 then save the settings.
Now run the game
try to start the board once the game is up and running.
This may not work as you may not have 223 installed but as you dont want to resoft mod this may be your only option.

thank you for such complete instructions!
Unfortunately it did not work. I did have 223yal i think it was and I tried it but the boot failed. arrgh I am so lost here! I just want my boy to be able to play the game! I am just so afraid to do anything to it myself and risk messing it up. humph. But thanks anyway! I will probably just call the guy who did it before and see what he can do!

If you get modmii - answer the basic questions on the pc it will download everything you need, it really is straight forward.
Put the files on the SD and as you really want to do as little as possible - almost zero chance of failure!,
load mmm (multi mod manager)from the home brew chanel, at the start you have to choose an ios for it to run from, choose 222 (its on the starting screen), it will then restart running on 222
Select wad manager and only install 249 and 250 (listed as 249d2xv7final-56 etc) - it really is straight forward and if you install nothing but these 2 = foolproof.
Alternative see if you have priiloader (if you don't then there is nothing that can be done appart from a rehack
Press the power button and stright away press and hold the reset button.
If priiloader comes up then you can enable a hack to block updates that may allow the original disc to run (as you are already on 4.3)
In the priiloader menu go down to hacks and press A
move down the hacks to block updates (both disc and online) and press the right button to change the selection to enable
go to the bottom and select SAVE
press b to return to main menu, move to the top (system menu) and select, it will then return the wii to wii menu - try and run the disc again

K so I did the lesser of two. the enabling the block on updates and IT WORKED!!! oh my thank you soooo much for you patience! So now Do I just leave it that way or fix it each time he is going to play that game? Why would it be disabled to begin with? kinda odd i think. I have read through many posts on here and have seen that many ppl are updating their mods, is that something that has to be done often?
Again, thank you so much for your help and patience! whoo hoo He can finally play!

Leave it that way
The point of that option in priiloader is to prevent anyone putting in a game, or pressing a button, and removing the softmod. You can now not update and remove the softmod without removing that setting.
With updates - it depends, things are changing all the time, however if you never get an issue, the "don't fix it if it aint broke" is the best advise.
Some newer games will need an update to your cios's, but until you encounter one you can leave it as you are
