So I need some serious help

When the Wii first came out, I bought the Wii key, (I honestly don't remember if it was version 1 or 2). It got put into storage, and now almost 3 years later, i plug it in and no games will work, it boots up fine, but i need some help.

How can i determine which wiikey I have? (can i do this without opening the wii?)

Does the wiikey still work? I realize that there has been alot of updates. I dont really want to play the new games, just the old ones (excite truck, paper mario, mario galaxy, mario party 8, etc..)

Along the way i'm sure the wii did some system updates, (it is currently version 4.2U)

I have burned the config 1.9s, the wiikey 1.9s firmware, but still can't get it to work.

I remember correctly you just pop in the config disk and power cycle right?
