Hi,
I've got a DVD that I want to copy a subset of using Nero 9. I've copied VIDEO_xxx and VTS_xxx files I want to a hard-drive directory. How can I write them to a blank DVD using Nero so they'll be readable using my DVD reader/write that feeds my TV. Are there some "gotchas" I've got to be aware of.
Thanks in advance,
Richard

Attar,
Thanks for your help. I got DVDFab8 working on my DVD. I switched my profile selection to "generic avi.divx.mp3" and selected all the items for extraction. The good news: I got some video from some of the tracks; the bad news: the videos were all swirling psychedelic images.
The likely cause is the error message in the right-center pane: "undefined AC-3/1". The documentation doesn't seem to address this; Nor does GOOGLE. Do you have any idea any idea about how to acquire the missing "AC-3/1" and install it? I'm running Windows XP/SP3.
Best,
Richard

P.S. I also got correct audio from the ripped files.

Did you rip the DVD to a folder using the HD Decrypter utility first.

I used DVD Ripper. Following is detailed account of what I did. I hope that gives you a clue as to where I screwed up. Meanwhile, I see if HD ripper does better for me.
===== "Transcript of my effort" =====
I downloaded DVDFab Decrypter (SetupDVDFab.exe) to K:\_Downloads\Multimedia_CD_DVD\DVD Ripper.
I installed it to K:\_Utilities\DVDFab 8:
DVDFab 8.0.0.5 (25/08/2010)
(Options: DVD Copy, DVD Ripper,
Blu-ray Copy, Blu-ray Ripper,
Video Converter, File Transfer)
Copyright (C) 2001-2010 Fengtao Software Inc.
http://www.dvdfab.com
Ran Start | All Programs | DVDFab8 | | DVDFab8
Was warmed to shut down AnyDVD:
Used Start | Control Panel | Admin Tools | Computer Management | Services & Apps | Services
Sorted services by name
Found AnyDVD; clicked its name Stop
Was warned that DMA (Direct Memory Access for the Hard Drive) was disabled
Allowed it to be started
? DVD Ripper
o Saw default setting generic avi.divx.audiocopy
o Switched to generic avi.divx.mp3
o Saw message: Undefined: AC-3/2
? To AVI
? Select a few sections: 1, 2, 3, roughly
? Selected new target directory K:\_Utilities\_MyDocuments\_Temp\JoyOfMath
? Started the ripper
? Got avi subdirectory with three AVI files: JOY_OF_MATH_DISC_1.Titlex.avi for x = 1-3

When I started a new try, I realized "Yes, I did start out selecting HD Decrypter". I failed to note that fact in my "transcript".

Thanks for your additional response (and hanging in there with me as I struggled with this).
Good news: I switched to "Generic" and got avi's which, when double clicked, played correctly (with audio and video) in Nero 9 ShowTime.
I have one last question. How do I take a collection of these avi's to produce an iso file. And what tool do you recommend to burn that iso to a DVD? Is any Nero 9 tool useful for the burn?
Again, thanks for your help!!

More info: I found Free ISO Creator via Google. It appears to both create ISOs and burn them. What do you think?

ISO is not a video format, it's a generic disk image, the contents could be
anything. ISO files have been around a lot longer than their recent usage as
video "containers".
Some programs started to create ISO because in a way, it was convenient.
Only one file to burn to disk (as a disk image) instead of the whole
video_ts folder and it's content.
At the end of the day, the iso contains the underlying files (video_ts folder)
when we're talking about DVD. There is no difference creating the DVD from the
ISO (assuming it contains the video_ts folder) or burning the video_ts folder
directly.
If you want to create a DVD from AVI input, use one of the programs that specialize
in it, such as AVStoDVD or DVD Flick.
If your standalone player plays AVI/Divx files directly, burn the AVI files to the disk
as data, and play them that way.

Dave,
That's great info. Thanks you very much.
I'm not trying to be a real multimedia jock. I'm just trying to write some limited appropriate for my teenage granddaughter.
Best wishes,
Richard
