1) I opened a .srt file in Notepad.
2) Copied, pasted entire contents to Google language tool box.
3) Translated entire contents to another language, English in this case.
4) Copied and pasted entire translated contents to a brand new file in Notepad.
5) Saved as .txt file, ANSI coding,
6) Saved another copy as .srt file, ANSI coding.
7) None of them, (5) or (6), works as a subtitle file with the provided .avi file.

Can someone tell me what I did are simply unorthodox.
Or perhaps, which steps is wrong or missing.
Thanks so much. I have no luck trying to watch some foreign movies.

Note the --> above.

Autumn, 1941.

00:00:43,423 -> 00:00:49,419
The German U-boat fleet has
first serious setbacks.

Note how the translator gave back ->

2
00:00:43,423 --> 00:00:49,419

Finally, used the replace command to change - to -- and it worked.

Thank you so much, you save me a lot of time searching for available software on the net. I have been searching for that for a long, long time.

Also, online translators add an extra space sometimes!
So, instead of 00:00:40,263 --> 00:00:43,255 it will come out as 00:00: 40,263 --> 00:00: 43,255
especially the babel fish translator.
Adhere to the Syntax!

I just thought to give you something else to watch out for.

But what is really fun, is to make a bi-lingual subtitle! Lotta work There's a a way to do this, but not an easy one (involves macros and stuff). The subs will look like this:

1
00:00:40,263 -> 00:00:43,255
La Rochelle, Frankreich. Herbst, 1941 .
La Rochelle, France. Autumn, 1941.
