I am trying to hardcode subs on to a movie and I was following the guide that is used here on afterdawn using virtual dub and the srt to ssa converter. The first problem I encountered was on the srt convertion for some reason it gives me the following message :input file error,subtitle #1however it then says job finished. i went ahead and converted it but i get nothing also i dont see the other formats in the guide here is a link to the guide im following if someone could maybe give me an update or another way to go i would apreciate it thank you.:

'Subtitle #1' is the first sub.
The numeral 1 followed by the time then the dialog.
If a numeral is missing it will give an error - and a blank output file.
Here's a link to a good .srt clip.

1
00:00:02,500 --> 00:00:05,617
Stitch-up. It was a stitch-up.

2
00:00:06,700 --> 00:00:10,090
They filmed hours of material

3

doing a good job of work,

I tried another movie and its working perfectly i think it was a bad srt file im going to look for another one. But I do have another concern if you look at the guide it tells you to look under video to select the compression I did not see those options on the virtualdub that I have so I guess my question is does that vary by movie or am i missing a plugin. Here is the build of virtualdub that im using 1.8.8

Under 'Video' > 'Compression' should be a list of compatible codecs that are installed on your PC.
You should select the same codec that was used on the source file.
(click 'File' > 'File Information')
In this case, the DivX codec was used - so select the 'DivX' codec under 'Video' > 'Compression'.

Free version DivX:

Always free XviD:

It takes an effort - there's not really any shortcuts.

General method is to check the timing at the beginning,
check it at the end, and adjust accordingly, using something like
Vobsub Subresync.
