I have an AVI file which is approx. 2.4GB It will not play in my standalone player.(Maybe someone can tell me why.)

I split the file in two pieces of 1.2GB using AVIDEMUX and now it plays ion my standalone but the subtitles don't appear.

I guess I would need to split the sub file to match both pieces of the AVI.

You can split a sub/idx file using VobSub Tool 'Sub File Cutter'
Open the sub and set the start and end time for the first part and save it.
Reset the start and end time for the second part and save it.
As long as "Modify timestamps to count from 'Start'" is checked the second part times will be reset.

I think the 2GB limit is for VFW codecs (the type that VirtualDub uses) - perhaps some standalone players honour that limit.

I tried to open and split a sub file but the save as option remain shaded out.

If do succeed to split file, once this is done do I have to do anything else or will it work with the avi file.

You have to find out the subtitle format.
There is more than one with the extension .sub
Drag it into Notepad;if it's a text based format it should be readable.

If it is, use Subtitle Workshop to open it.
If it opens, load the movie.
Highlight all the subs that don't apply and delete those lines.

Start playing the video and pause it as the actor voices the first line of subtitle dialog.
In the image I paused the video (which I can't capture) as the actor says the line.
He says it at frame 376 - but the subtitle came on at frame 359 - which is too early.
Highlight all of the subtitles and press the double arrow logo - the subtitle takes the time from the video and all subsequent subs are adjusted automatically.

I've yet to see a Divx player that can handle files > 2GB.

Can't vouch for this app or it's source, but it sounds like it's made for the job.
