media player classic wasn't giving me the option of turning on subtitles. i did a search and found what would be a simple fix of going to options > output and turning on vmr9/directx 9 instead of the "system default" that i had for all options, but that only makes it so the video no longer shows up. what else can i do?

i was trying to use VLC as a temporary fix as the subtitles turn on fine there but it's choppy playback where the lines of the picture split. i'm on an hp dv7 laptop, 4gb ram, core 2 duo processor so i don't think it has anything to do with requirements. i'd be happy to get either of the two programs working properly.
