Hello. I bought the Inuyasha DVD box set and I wanted to edit out all of the annoying "coming up" and "this is what's going to happen next episode" stuff. Also, I wanted to fit more episodes per DVD. The problem is that I've never authored a DVD with subtitles before and I am unfamiliar with how to do this. I read a bunch of guides that gave advice for movies, but I've run into some problems.

My strategy was this:
1) rip the dvd with dvd decrypter.
2) Use TMPG DVD Author to edit the audio/video and create a new dvd.
3) Use VOBedit to demux the new dvd into a separate .m2v and .ac3 file for each episode.
4) Use VOBedit to demux the subtitles from the original movie.
5) Cut out the annoying parts of the subtitle with SubtitleCreator.
6) Use IFOedit to reauthor each episode as a separate DVD.
7) Load each episode/DVD as a separate track into TMPG (not quite sure if this will work yet) and author a completed DVD.

My problem is this:
When I select "demux all subpic streams" in VOBedit, I only get one full episode. It doesn't rip the entire title. When I select a subpicture stream and select, "demux complete title set" I have the same problem. When I demux an individual sub pic for each vob (0x20) I only get the last half of each episode. How do I find out where the rest of the subpics are?

Also, I am aware that this process is rather complicated so if there is an easier way to go about it, I'm all ears.

Thanks for any advice you can give me.

I would rip the DVD as usual then load it into DVD Shrink.
Click 'Re-author' and look on the right pane.
A typical episodic disk will list a column of 'Titles'.
The running time beside each Title will tell you if it's an episode or a trailer, etc.

Drag a Title from right to left and highlight it.
Select start/end frames - typically any upcoming stuff would be at the end of the current selection - so you don't keep those frames.
Last step would be to 'Backup' to a new folder (or image), play the files to check quality, subs, etc then burn the files with your favourite burner (ImgBurn).

I didn't know DVD Shrink could do that. Thanks for letting me know. However, the only remaining problem is that I would like a menu. How do I go about adding a menu to this DVD?

Also, as a side note: is there any way to make a menu button to turn the subtitles on and off?

Thanks!

Use the menu from the original DVD?

Use VobBlanker to open VIDEO_TS.IFO from the original DVD.
For output, create a new folder.

On the top pane, the episodes are listed VTS_01 VTS_02 etc

On the top pane, highlight VTS_01 (episode 1)
In the lower pane, highlight the PGC associated with episode1 (usually PGC1)
Click the 'Replace' button and select VTS_01_0.IFO from the Re-authored disk .

On the top pane, highlight VTS_02 (episode 2)
In the lower pane, highlight the PGC associated with episode2 (usually PGC1)
Click the 'Replace' button and select VTS_02_0.IFO from the Re-authored disk .

Repeat as required.

Click 'Process' and test the new DVD.

Thank you very much for your reply. I appear to be running into some difficulty. The DVD isn't neatly set up episode by episode. There is one title that contains the entire dvd along with the extras. Also, the pgcs are not divided neatly into episodes. I tried replacing them, but it didn't work and the files weren't replaced properly (the cut footage was still there). This is why I was running into trouble before with not being able to find all the subtitle streams. The video/audio/subpic streams are divided up randomly and in not in episodic fashion.

Is there any way to make my own menu for this? I'm used to using TMPG DVD Author, but it doesn't support subtitles, so is there another option that will let me create a menu for a multi-episode dvd with subtitles? And as a side part: is there a way to add a subtitle button? For some reason, I can't get the subtitles to play automatically. If I don't have a dvd player with the menu function, then I can't turn on the subs.

Thanks again for your help.

The problem is not creating a menu - it's getting the existing subs into a format that authoring programs will accept - and they only seem to want text based subs.

If you have each episode in its own folder you can run DVDSubEdit (File > Open full domain) select the subs and on the lower right of the screen - save them as .srt files.
I have seen this give a reasonably good output - but it is OCR.
You can edit the .srt file in NotePad.

If each episode is one VOB (1GB or less) then you can load the VOB in DVD Flick, then 'Edit' the title to load the .srt file.
You then add another title and repeat.
In the Video > Advanced settings, ensure that 'Copy mpeg2 streams' is checked - else the whole project will be re-encoded (hours of processing)
Opt to create a menu and save to a folder.

If the episode is more than one VOB, I would use VOB2MPG to create a large MPEG2 file and use that in DVD Flick.

Thanks for the advice. I converted the reauthored DVD (that I made in DVD shrink) subtitles to srt format using subrip. I checked the files and they look fine. when I added the subtitles in dvdflick, everything appeared to be fine, but when I selected the subtitle stream when the iso was playing, it didn't show. I tried this in DVDlab too and I had the same problem. Do I have to rip the subtitles directly from the original DVD then edit them in a text editor for this to work? I don't see why I should have to, but that's the only thing I can think of that would prevent the subtitles from appearing.

The .srt times are correct?
The position can be viewed/checked/adjusted using DVDSubEdit.

When I play it in subtitle creator the times and position is perfect.

If the subtitles are selectable with the software media player, they may be below the screen - that's why I suggested DVDSubEdit.
