Everything wiped and Itunes freezes when I plug the ipod in


I am using an 80gig ipod Classic
I was using itunes, I purchased a couple of songs and i was busy sorting my songs on my ipod and creating playlists etc. all of a sudden the itunes froze so I ejected my ipod (safely). Suddenly everything was gone from my ipod except some photos and games I had on there?? And strangely it says there is only 22.2 gig remaining on my iPod. Now when I try and plug my ipod back into the computer itunes freezes and i have to end task. I have tried plugging the ipod into a different windows laptop but it does the same thing. I am wondering whether i an get all my songs and movies back (they are not all backed up) because it seems like they could still be there but not showing? I am using a windows 7 laptop.
