ipod shuffle help

My daughter has an ipod shuffle that isn't working like it should. I'm not to familiar with ipods but I plugged it in to charge and the orange light flashed three times then went off. When I try to connect it to the computer to add music to it through itunes no devices comes up. I'm pretty sure its the 2nd generation it was sitting in her room for a little while and she decided she wanted to listen to it and add songs. It had music on it before but now it wont turn on or anything. Any help would be great. Thanks
