New iPod won't charge

I've read a few questions that sounded similar to mine, but I thought I would double check just to be sure... I won an iPod nano at a conference about 10 months ago. It got misplaced by my toddler daughter while still new and in its box, and I just found it yesterday. I opened it for the first time and tried to set it up using my MacBook Pro. Everything looked fine, it synced and a battery appeared that turns green and says "charging". I left it charging overnight. This morning I ejected it and it immediately went black and would not turn back on. I plugged it back in, and sure enough it goes back to "charging"... It's been charging all day (while I'm working, so I'm sure the computer is not asleep), and still same thing, NOTHING will turn it on when unplugged.
I tried calling Apple support, only to be told that it's no longer covered by warranty. I'm not sure when the conference people bough it, but it's actually engraved "2009" and the name of the conference, so obviously was purchased for this purpose... Anyway, is it possible that the battery actually died because it sat in a drawer for about 10 months...? There is no Apple store within 500 miles, so I'd like to know for sure that's it before spending money on shipping it... Any input would be greatly appreciated.
