Loved to have found this thread a couple of years ago or more.
Zen Xtra 30gb serious problem!!
My NOMAD froze at EAX for some time, I would just wait it out to listen to tunes.
But the audio socket was loose anyway, and thinking stall was the HDD, I gave up.

But have decided it is time to Resurrection it!

First query:

Bought a new HDD for it

has a stock MHT2040AT which is 4,200 rpm

Power requirements 5V ± 5%
Power Consumption Read/Write*1 Read 2.0W typical / Write 2.1W typical
Idle 0.65W typical
Standby 0.25W typical
Sleep 0.10W typical

HDD I bought

is a MHT2060AS 4,400 rpm, only other difference is dbells and uses .85w idle.

But it does mention spin up to be 1.amp.

Should I be worried about this?

My second query:

I have bought a charger off e-bay for 3.90$, is is 1.5A.and hopefully fits.

Both batteries are dead, I think I did charge them when I left it in store.
But still I'm sure they are fine.

But when I get it running, after reading that thread, I will try and solve the EAX stall. With the current HDD in.

It seems the solution is to put updated firmware, I have rolled back wmp11 to 10.
And am on Xp-sp3 though.

But really my query is, does anyone have the original firmware file.

I don't want AUDIBLE and nor does Play For Sure sound very appealing.

Any help would be appreciated. Is there a way in recovery mode or a function to run a repair or an on-board reload, I mean is there a built in firmware solution.

Oh! and I also took it apart and had the audio socket re-soldered, it wasn't the internal pins that were loose after all but the whole socket! Well I hope so ;-;

Also I read in the thread someone's idea about a solar panel, and this sounds great.

Hope that person may find this an let us know how it went!

:D

LMAO~

If any of you guys get stuck in rescue mode or on EAX no need for firmware update.

http://www.fixya.com/support/t119745-rescue_mode_v1_13

Now you know the High Tech solution...

Just tap it above menu button, ; - ;

Amazing.

Ok so, I stopped using my Zen Xtra because it always hung on EAX.

Has been years.

Now I got a new charger off e-bay. Turned it on and it hung.
Waited it out... and it finally loaded past the EAX. Turned off properly.
And it shut down, turned it on and it loaded fine.

Pushed in the reset hole, and held the play button until rescue mode came up (while it was on). Selected 1. clean up, which did a disc clean. Then in rescue selected 4'reboot.

And then it loaded the EAX srceen, :O theeeeen... now it is rebuilding library :)

Seems all fine. No firmware update needed. Which should mean I can plug this 60gb HDD in, 2~ format all in rescue mode. And it will format the hdd for use.

I think play for sure, means you can't just wack in another hdd. As play for sure firmware stores info on the HDD for operation I think.

And just so you know, 3"reload os" does not mean, it will reload the firmware version from with in your zen, from some back up source, but will request you to plug it into usb and reload a NEW firmware file from your pc.

Just so you know :)

Oh here is what I did.

Powered on, made sure had charged battery.

Downloaded firmware 1.02.01 original from that link.

Rescue mode: reload Os.

Plugged in zen, didn't find it, and 'new hardware' didn't auto install because found no drivers so I downloaded from http://www.pcdriverupdate.com/sound/Creative/4038.html

or anywhere the JB3_PCWDRV_US_1_23_00.exe is about 900kb, and is the USB driver for zen xtra. Or here http://www.driverskit.com/freedownload/MP3/Creative/NOMAD_Jukebox_Zen_Xtra/NOMAD_Jukebox_Zen_Xtra/get18226.html

Click the Firmware .exe being either the new one with play for sure, or the old one I linked you. It will search for zen and not find it, leave it open (the exe zen intall firmware bar)

UNPLUG YOUR zen xtra Install the driver. Plug it back in to complete driver install.
And then firmware install will start working. Wala!

Or click the firmware .exe after.

It was a hdd problem I think for me, it stalls at EAX when has trouble 'rebuilding library' which is the next step after EAX screen.

Buuut I will try my 40Gb hdd back in now with new firmware and see if it happens again.

^_ ^ hope this helps

Yep it was the HDD has hung on EAX on the old one, I will do the recovery mode thing again on this old HDD.

Just so you know, the original firmware, in explorer I still can drag drop files into it :) with that driver I linked.
