I just installed OpenSuse on my Eee PC 900a(it is installed on a 8GB sdhc sd card and the built in 4gb ssd is being used for the swap(all of it).I currently have 1gb of ram installed and it runs really fast. It is great for browsing the internet and watching youtube videos with out any issues. For some reason though, when ever I try to watch full episodes of southpark on http://www.southparkstudios.com/ or full episodes on fox http://www.fox.com/full-episodes/, the video gets all slow and choppy causing the video playback to be unwatchable (at times it will even freeze). I have OpenSuse set for high performance and have tried both wired and wireless internet connection and get the same results. Will upgrading from 1gb of ram to 2gb of ram make the videos play correct? I have watched southpark/fox on my main machine(tower pc running vista ultimate)(4gb ram, 1tb hard drive, dual cross fired 512 graphics cards, Intel quad core processor,intel motherboard, bluray burner, hd-dvd drive(from xbox 360),dvd burner(yes I know it is over kill lol, but makes ripping music,dvds,blurays,hd-dvd easy and quick)(and game play on it looks really nice) without any issue. The reason why I want to play southpark/fox on my eee pc is so 1) I can hook it up to my family room tv (has vga in), 2) my tower pc is in my basement and I don't fell like having to unhook and lug it up and down stairs.

doubt upping the ram will change a damn thing.. the problem is with npviewer (a part of flashplayer) and the fact the eee isn't really up to full screen video... it's only a netbook. you can add 430 gigs of ram and you will still get the same problem.. because linux uses ram differently pr pre-caching pages.. you will notice that whether you have 256mb's or 200gigs the ram will be filled pretty quick with cached prefetch pages..
Fullscreen video needs something with more bang than a netbook.. mine will just about cope with it's 800 cpu and it's 256 ram, but only with pretty low def stuff... soon as you go over 600x400 it starts to bog down... see what is running you can kill.. no need for portmap and a load of other stuff.
you do know that suse is proprietary (even the open version) and full of novell drm? last time I tried to use it the drm and deliberately broken by design crap made me switch to something else within 30 minutes.

Didnt know that linux used ram differently (first time). When did you try opensuse last? I am using version 11.3 and it seems rock solid to me.

up your ram & try to assign more to onboard videocard which might ease the problems you are having but will not eliminate it because of your onboard videocard.

Ok, I will try that once I have a chance to get the ram(sometime this week). My eeepc can use up to 2gb ddr2 200-Pin. Just wondering though, If I buy really fast ram, would that help with speed? I Know that speed on a hard drive can help speed up how fast the data is read.
I installed the hulu app for opensuse 11.3, and most of the videos on there play perfectly( been watching the simspons, american dad, bob's burgers, and even let my little cousin use it to watch naruto on it( didn't want him messing with my main machine)and it worked perfectly, but when I went to watch House, bones, or american pickers on hulu, the video started to get choppy( must be the way the video was encoded).

get same speed of ram as you have now because faster ram might not be seen or might not post at all.

even if you can use faster ram, new faster ram will run at old slower ram speed. also you'll not see much difference in speed performance if use all faster ram.

This is a combo cpu/software issue.. when configured properly a 1.2 cpu with 256 ram will do a decent job of youtube video.. as long as you don't go past 640x480 and make sure to kill EVERYTHING else you don't need.. more ram really won't help.. because the core operating system is only running maybe 70mb's tops.. unlike wincrap which needs a gig just for a pretty desktop and antivirus and all the rest of the crap..
video and linux is one of those things.. different installs on the same hardware can differ wildly..
and I last used opensuse 4 weeks ago.. and it's shite. fedora is a better bet.. suse is broken by design and stuffed to the brim with mono dependencies and hidden patents and drm..
print the output of a top command when running video.. lest see where the bottleneck is.. probably a codec or resolution problem.. or something like that... windoze people can't help... they are passengers.. we are in the pilots seat.

theres the ram guzzler.... actually looks like your hardware is barely up to running video.. very high cpu usage. I can't figure why a simple launcher should be taking up so much system resource.. try killing it and see what happens.. if it improves matters then either knobble it completely or force it to be "nice" .. ;) http://www.linux.com/archive/feed/58638
have you set your agp aperture properly? gave me a few problems on a system which should be more than fast enough... using main ram instead of the card onboard stuff... it's usually a kernel boot parameter iommu=2 or something like that.. depends on the card and it's bus location address...

google is very helpful on these kinds of matters where unless somebody has the same hardware and same suse as you all that can happen is guesswork (and I'm not never nohow installing suse on my beefy 64 bit debian box to find out.. my grafix will be different anyway)
I think thats where the problem lies.. using software instead of hardware rendering.. are you 100% sure you have the right driver module installed and actually running for your card? .. 70+% is a lot of cpu to be throwing at a video playing thing.. but it will often happen running generic X or vesa drivers..
You might have guessed.. I'm the only long time linux user around these days.. and I run debian and variants.. not suse or it's novell poisoned friends.

I dropped opensuse and went with fedora (plus I added 2gb of ram) and man is it fast on my eeepc 900a. It never ran so fast before

Thought you had done something to get away from nasty suse drm nightmare. Gave the "latest" a test and it wouldn't even play an audio cd.. just kept ejecting it.
