hi i just got a Dell desktop computer with XP and i am trying to hook it up to my internet using a DSL router. i already have an HP desktop with XP connected with an Ethernet cable and a laptop running Win7 connected wirelessly. I had no problems with my HP desktop, it just plugged in and started working. But with this dell, i have it plugged in to my router with an Ethernet cable and nothing shows up on the computer like it isn't plugged in at all. I am terrible with networking and all this stuff, so i was wondering if there is some extra step i have to do to get this dell running off my router. any help is appreciated. Thanks.

what kind of router do you have? It should be automatic.

A usual internet connection with cable or dsl is.
1. internet is connected to the input modem box.
2. modem box output gets connected to router
3. The computers are all connected to the router.

Make sure you setup the home network on the dell. Also make sure the firewall on the dell is disable at least until after you setup the internet.

yeah i think i did all of that. I did a setup thing on the dell for a home network and when i was done it said the computer was now configured for a home network or something like that. i have a modem and router all in one, its from actiontec. its a GT704WG if that helps at all. the light for the slot that i plugged the ethernet cable into is lit up on the router for the dell too.

the only network card is the 1394 and it appears to be functioning properly. below it though under "Other Devices" there are yellow question marks beside the following:

Ethernet Controller
PCI Device
SM Bus Controller
Video Controller
Video Controller (VGA Compatible)
