I have two computers using Vista, one using Vista Home Premium 32 Bit and a laptop using Vista Home Premium 64 Bit.
With the network set up, the 32 bit computer is connected directly to the router, which is connected to the modem. The laptop is connected wirelessly to the router.
I can access the laptop from the 32 bit computer with no problem, but cannot access the desktop from the laptop. Both have passwords, the when connecting to the desktop it takes me into the "network folder" that lets me see what folders are being shared, but I cannot access any of those folders. It keeps giving me the access is denied error.
If trying to connect from the desktop to the laptop, it asks for a username and password. I enter those and have access to everything I need.
I can't figure out how to get windows to ask for a username and password when trying to connect from the laptop to the desktop.
Vista can sometimes be a bit tricky to network, supposed to be easier than XP Lol. Have you got both comps set to private network in the network sharing centre. It might be a good idea to add guest to the shared folder using the drop down arrow in the share tab.
Enabling File and Printer Sharing Options
By changing your network location type to private, network discovery is automatically enabled in the Sharing and Discovery section of the Network and Sharing Center window. The following additional file and printer sharing options must be manually enabled:
File sharing
Public folder sharing
Printer sharing
Password protected sharing
When all of these sharing and discovery options are enabled, your computer can: Locate other computers and devices on your home network and have other computers locate your computer
Share its folders
Share its Public folder
Share its printers
Require user names and passwords for other computers that connect to the shared folders and printers of this computer
Both are set to private, and all options are enabled. When I go to the desktop in the network folder, it shows me the folders that are shared, but when I try to open one of those folders, it tells me access is denied.
Thats what I can't figure out. The settings are the same for both computers, but one just can't access the other.
I wont have access to my vista machine till after the weekend to see how i have set it up.
Have you turned off password protected sharing, if not turn off. Everything else i believe should be on
Have you added Everyone to the share tab using the drop down arrow, right click folder and select share tab. Cant remember if i did the same on the advanced section in this tab also and enabled full control, dont think i did but unsure. Remove anything else apart from admin or yourself, Deny will always take priority over allow.
cant remember if i added Guest also.
Also are you using a password to log on to the two machines, i am not sure vista will let you see shared folders on a network if using a machine with blank password for log on.
I will check after the weekend if you have not got it sorted by then.
Both machines have passwords to log in. When accessing the laptop from the desktop it always asks for the username and password, which I enter and then I have access to the laptop. This is not the case when trying to access the desktop from the laptop. If I try to access the desktop, it doesn't ask for a password, and it takes me to the view of shared folders. Once I'm there I cannot access any shared folders as it says I do not have permission to access those folders.
I have all features on, have tried it with password protected sharing on and off. Everyone is allowed in the shared tab, and nothing else is present in advanced sharing tab. Guest account is enabled on the desktop, although it is not enabled on my laptop. I have tried it with the guest account both on and off.
Also, I know its not a firewall issue as the desktop doesn't currently have a firewall on it.
I have checked my settings on my Vista laptop and unfortunately all settings were as discussed previously.
You are pressing the Add Button after you have selected Everyone from the drop down list before pressing the share button ?
This may sound obvious and silly but this is what i was doing when i had problems setting mine up, in the end i was sharing with no one until i realised lol.
