I haven't tried using Google's Chrome OS, but if the following link is accurate, you can download a virtual image of it here.

why won't they release a proper beta? .. I guess they are worried about people finding out about it's dubious qualities up front.

The version I got from here http://gdgt.com/google/chrome-os/download/ worked fine for me when used in Sun's VMware.
