so i have an old dell laptop.
i need to run xp on it.. ME is way to crappy for me. The laptop wont boot to usb, has no floppy drive, no cd drive. I cant figure out how to do a network boot
is there a way i can hook the internal lappy harddrive up in my desktop and partition it to boot to a linux distro that will let me boot the laptop to a usb stick with a windows installer on it?
i could even get away with running ubuntu on it i guess. dosnt really matter.. its only purpose is to run a program called "tuner studio" and they have a linux version.

Your best is probably just take the hard drive out connect it to another computer then boot live cd or xp install and format and choose your hard drive you connected.

My desktop is running an ECS board with a amd quad core.. completely different than the dell with its old single core intel. this WOULD work if i did a repair install on the dell afterwords but i simply cant... no cd drive.
unless i can do the repair install from a usb somehow?
im thinking getting a boot loader to run on the drive is the best bet, just dont know how to go about it.

It looks like you have two options, either use a media bay or perform a network install by turning a different computer into a bootp server then let the server manage the install and transfer everything via lan port.
UPDATE - Found another solution thanks to "will_" at Dell Community forums, it basically goes the same route I was first intending on getting you to go.
Quote: Thanks for your replies.
For the benefit of anyone else who has the problem, what I've done is:
Taken the HD out of the laptop.
Bought a 2.5 to 3.5 adaptor (any good electronics shop) which allows the HD to be plugged into any normal PC (through a normal IDE and power cable)
Firstly, I took a Ghost image of the drive, to make sure I didn't lose anything important.
Then, I disconnected the main PC HDD, and set the laptop HD as the only drive, and as master. I then booted off a Win98 CD into DOS, and partitioned and formatted the drive into 2 partitions. 1 empty, most of the space on the drive, formatted as a DOS system drive, and the second about 1 gig, both FAT32.
Then I bought the main PC HD back as master, and set the laptop HD as slave. Booted into windows and copied the contents of the i386 folder off the XP CD onto the second little partition on the laptop HD.
Then the drive goes back into the laptop, and when started up it booted into DOS since it was formatted /sys. Then I ran the XP setup from the i386 folder (I forget the exact name, think it's winnt32.exe) and during the setup process I reformatted the main drive as NTFS.
There you have it. A CD-free XP install, without having to do funky network installs etc......
Thanks all, for your help.
W
Any of these three options should work, I hope I have helped at least a little if not fixed your problem.

There was no need to paste all that, he posted his service tag and we all had direct access to all the info we needed. I have gave him, his only 3 solutions.

It wasn't your opinion, it was the fact you stated all the specs when there was no need as he provided everything we needed. I do agree though, if you want something more fast but just as stable go with windows 2000 with latest updates (not NT).

What are you talking about, we just have differences but same views... you have not posted anything helpful, now as a moderator if your going to post make yourself useful at least, gather information and help. That is what forums are for, if you want to argue with people without logic you go to facebook. This is an outreach to the open community for help not a place to egg on arguments or rage.

Hey do what you want to do, in the end your the one who's name is up here, and you are the one who is talking the way you talk. Remember you are speaking on behalf of AfterDawn and you are supposed to represent it in a good way. I am here to help people out, and ask questions to areas I have yet to explore. No matter how much you have posted in the past or how helpful you think you where, fact remains comments like this Quote: fight children, i hate peace, i like a good rumble. besides i will win & you will loose.
reflect a persons true values and character. If you want to ban me then ban me, but I don't think I will be gone that easy over your mistake.
Now to get back on topic, firefoxx04 did any of the methods I posted resolve your problem, if not give me an insight to what is going on.

Well that sounded like a threat and insult to me in a passive aggressive manor, not the most grammatically correct one, but still one non the less. So to say that and then say Quote: i'll only ban you if you do something stupid. also i'm here to help others just you do.
Does not sound right, first your accusing me, now you are siding with me. It doesn't matter if could just please delete this comment all the way up too Quote: fight children, i hate peace, i like a good rumble. besides i will win & you will loose.
or at least take out all the one's of us arguing so that this forum can hopefully help others. Please.
