Got a "windows restore" malware last night. Malewarebytes cleaned it, but i lost my desktop, icons and favorites. Cleaned again, but the same. So, I restored back a day, and all is fine, however, my favorites are gone. I created one favorite, but the next day it is gone. My favorite folder is intact C:\users\joe\favorites. I tried to import, but get an error "not a bookmark file".
I tried upgrading to IE 8, but same thing.
Any thoughts? I would hate to reinstall Windows. Oh, this is vista home premium, and IE7
thanks

You should create backup of your data.

There is nothing wrong with my data. Everything is still intact, in fact the favorites folder is still where it always was, it is just IE isn't accessing it.

copy the favorites folder to another location, delete the old favorites folder then copy the relocated favorites to the deleted favorites location.

I'll give that a shot. If that doesn't work I'll got to Internet options and reset IE. I'll let you know what happened.

Nothing is working. It's funny, when I tried to move or copy it, I get a mesasge "The folder does not exist anymore, yet there it is! No biggie, what I am doing is clicking on each website in the favorites folder, opeing the web page, and re-adding it to favorites. Pain in the ass, but it's only about 30 or so.
Thanks

No, but what worked was opening every one individually and re-adding them to favorites one at a time. But.........ta da a new issue. For the life of me, I cannot download wallpaper from the net. I can take any picture I have, right click and select as background. But when I try to do that from the net, it says "access denied". I added myself (Joseph instead of Joe) with admin privilages as a new user and everything works fine. I put in my vista disc, clicked repairs, and it said everything was fine.
