OK, here is the story. The graphics hardware on my main desktop gave up the ghost last week (fans, I think) and now I am stuck sharing my sisters sucky Extensa 5220. I don't know what she has done to it, but it is slower than a drunk retard. Takes up to a minute to open a browser window and about 5-10 minutes for the computer to shut down, which is a real pain in the ass. I have tried defragging the HDD, running CCleaner (Registry as well) and cleaning the registry with Vista Manager. She has hardly any programs on the computer but yet it still seems slow. I don't think it has a virus but I will run a scan tomorrow. But any solutions and fixes would be most appreciated.
NOTE: Reinstalling Vista is unfortunately not an option...

Thanks,
James.

Oh and computer specs...
Processor: Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 560 @ 2.13GHz, 2128 Mhz, 1 Core
RAM: 1GB
GPU: Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family

Let me know if you need more info. Thanks.

if you are running vista with 1gig of ram then that is why it is slow. get more ram & vista will run faster. try change the amount of video ram to be less then 128meg say down to 32 or 64meg so windows has more to use.

OK then, how about increasing virtual memory (Getting more RAM is also not an option I'm afraid) and decreasing the video memory? Also how would I go about decreasing video memory? I'm also not running the Aero themes.

Thanks for all your help ddp,
James

Is there any particular reason why reinstalling is not an option?

methememb, you want to advertise on this site then you have to pay for it as per forum rules. post edited. i run a business as does scum & others but we don't do what you just did so don't do that again, understood!?

ps3lvanub, virtual ram which uses your hd is a lot slower then laptop ram so won't see much speed increase. the 2 bottlenecks you have with vista is your cpu speed & 1gig of ram with part of that used for the onboard video. if you were to upgrade to xp then will see night & day difference in speed but that is up to you.

I can't see many problems with an upgrade.. the 965 chipset is so common as to be in my "generic" stock driver and chipsets collection..

All I can't find out is if the extensa thing has an ide or sata hdd. A quick look in the bios would tell me of course.

I would upgrade to XP in a blink of an eye. Only problem is it's not my laptop and my dad who knows squat about computers says no. He went psycho at me for doing it to the family computer. I will go and see if an extra few gig of ram is an option. Thanks guys.

ps3lvanub, i just finished working on a laptop with vista & a gig of ram, it is slower then my old p4 2.5ghz with 768megs of ram & xp. it takes upwards of about 5 minutes for vista to finish loading. this is from the link i posted earlier. uses ddr2 sodimm ram.

Sounds like an exact duplicate of the craptop I'm using. Dad says he will buy more RAM.
Thanks again.
