My problem is when i go to get on the internet and i click on the firefox or EI icon instead of opening up a window comes up saying "choose the program you want to open to use to open this file"when i click on any of the options given they all say cannot open this file and some will say file missing or corrupt. I can get into the internet but i have to click on anything that will bring up a toolbar and i click on favorites or history and it lets me in.People on the internet said to go to system restore but when i find that and click on it ,it wont open,it seems like a lot of stuff is gone. I hope you can help me ,i cant afford to call in a computer person to fix it.
Thanks for taking the time to read this ,
Brenda

restart press f8 and go into safe mode
if you pc starts fully in safe then you know all hope is not gone!
then go to system restore start accessories then system tools then system restore
look for the option to show more restore points
if all restore points are missing in safe mode i personally would boot normal salvage pictures and document files and wipe everything either using system disk's that came with pc or choosing system restore during boot if your pc has that option

XP
Have you tried pressing f8 as soon as your keyboard turns on? And keep pressing it, it won't hurt anything?

Looks like your LNK/EXE file associations may be invalid.
Download:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/fileassoc/xp_exe_fix.zip
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/fileassoc/linkfile_fix.zip
You will need to be on an Administrator Account
Unzip/Extract each file
Click on each file and it will add the information back to the registry
Restart your computer
Next I would download and install Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free Edition and run and update and then a full system scan.
---
If you would still like doing the system restore:
Go to Start > Shutdown > Restart
After the computer comes back on go ahead and begin spamming the F8 key.
NOTE: If you have an F_Lock button on your keyboard make sure it is engaged (on)
Next go ahead and choose Safe Mode
Once it loads up you will get a message - say you would like to restore to an earlier time. If there are no entries/or only 1 entry - you may have a virus and it could have deleted all of restoration points that were clean.

You jinxed me!!
Yesterday I was getting files for my wii off filetrip and downloaded a file from a banner like an idiot and just as I suspected virus!!
Went to restore and all points are gone .. Ran CCleaner and did a boot time scan and all is well!
Was scared because my usual backup drive is being used on my xk3y.
