keep xp on it, the atom is designed for xp. I had windows seven lite version on my acer d260 atom450 and it was very slow to bootup and to shutdown, programs took forever to open up. Now its a speed demon with xp on it, I also tried ubuntu and it was quick to start and shutdown but harder to use. Worst case scenario I would use ubuntu before I go back to windows 7.
In your situation probably a 7200 rpm drive will speed up your computer, I only have 1gb of memory on mine and don't notice any slowdown. But netbooks aren't the best computers to play HD video due to there low power cpu's and video chipset. They can play HD but barely.
