Hello, I am trying to network my desktop (windows XP) and my laptop (windows Vista) by using a Cat 5 (crossover) ethernet cable. The only purpose of me doing this is because my laptop hard drive is smaller than my desktops and I want to be able to transfer stuff back and forth between the two very quickly. I have been working on backing up my 950dvd collection to .AVI to put an external hard drive which requires lots of ripping, shrinking, and converting.
I was wondering how I get my windows XP and Vista computers networked by that cable? I followed this guide http://www.conniq.com/Windows-networking...vista-intro.htm but it is still not working.. the laptop found my desktop and I could view shared folders from my desktop on my laptop (at VERY limited and slow connectivity).. it takes forever to have a file transferred from my laptop to my desktop.. and my desktop doesnt even find my laptop in the network.
Desktop= windows XP (limited or no connectivity)- doesnt find laptop in network
Laptop= windows Vista (limited- Unidentified Network- Private Network) finds desktops shared files and folders but takes FOREVER to transfer stuff over due to there being a connection problem..
Where am I going wrong? Both computers in firewall section allow for printer and file sharing. Thanks!

disable the firewall completely on both machines until your done, and are you sure the wire your using is in fact a crossover cable. also in vista network management(under adapter setting) disable every thing except TCP/IP v4 and network sharing

Sorry im not as well with the layout on Vista as I am on XP. Is this in network connections/properties of the connection/Networking tab?.. Are these the settings I should have followed below:
Client for Microsoft networks: disabled
QoS Packet Scheduler: disabled
File and printer sharing for microsoft networks: Enabled
Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6): Disabled
Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4): Enabled
Link Layer Topology Discovery Mapper I/O Driver: Disabled
Link Layer Topology Discovery Responder: Disabled
All of them are enabled at the moment but is that the settings above that I am supposed to have on those on the vista computer?
and on the next tab (Sharing Tab) do I have
"Allow other network users to connect through this computer's internet connection" disabled or enabled?
and on same tab
"Allow other network users to control or disable the shared internet connection" enabled or disabled? (this one is greyed out unless the top one is checked.
Thanks a million in advance.

If you want to transfer files you better use a serial cable(RS-232 standar) you can buy at any computer parts store; another thing you can do is to connect them in a network and create a workgroup(NEWNET for example) then they will see each other, the next step will be sharing the folders on the computer source, finally you go to network places, and click on view workgroup and computers and you will see the PCs and the shared folders.
I have transfer in this way; another way would be to connect both to the internet, and use Remote Desktop, I have done it too and the transfer of files is relatively fast I have transfered alot of videos, documents and pictures, around 5 GB of data.

Alright with no luck after turning the settings off that I was told to I went and bought another Crossover cable to make 100% sure that it was a cat 5 crossover.. I am still having the same problem. the network connection status on the xp pro computer is limited or no connectivity and does not find anything from the Vista computer. The vista computer in network connection details has a physical address, DHCP enabled yes, Autoconfiguration IPv4 Adress, IPV4 subnet mask is there and NetBios Tcpip enabled Yes.
These in that same network connection details have nothing:
Ipv4 Default Gateway
Ipv4 DNS Server
IPv4 Wins Server

Perhaps its not a network related issue, then the only other thing i can think of is to turn off Vistas Remote Differential Compression and temp disable Indexing services
