Hi all
I'm a new user to windows 7 as i've just upgraded from win xp 32 bit to win7 pro 64 bit to take advantage of being able to use more memory amongst other things
As its a family pc there are 4 log ons all are administrator at the moment.I have an external drive connected that I tend to save most of my files when downloaded to,since upgrading I cannot save to the the root of the drive ie D:/ it says I need administrator privaleges but I can save it if I create a directory then put the file in that directory ie D:/downloads.
How can I change it so that I can save files in the root directory.
Don't know if it makes any difference but as it shows the logons alphabetically and I'm last would this effect the admin priority as the accounts are all admin

There is a difference between a user with certain admin rights and a full administrator account.. suggest M$ website and obscure hard to understand help pages.. look at setting up a full administrator account.. called administrator.
You shouldn't be saving files in the root directory anyway.. make a directory off the root and use that instead. A lot of times a root directory for a drive is set up by "system" to belong to "system" or in unix terms root and wheel .. dunno about crapdoze 7 but I do know that when it comes to actually owning your hardware windoze doesn't like you to have any real say what you do with it.. it decides and you have to follow like a good little sheep..

try making a directory there \media or whatever and see if it lets you use it then.. it's probably some pointless "security" feature from yet another virus ridden bug laden M$ product.

I love windows 7 ......
I get very few linux jobs and don't touch macs, without windows i'd be broke.lol
that said if you delete the partition on your external drive and start again it will be fine but you will lose all data on there. win 7 has some odd bits it likes the first 100 megs for it's self, but making a folder and chucking everything into it ought to do the same thing. just make a shortcut on your desktop to the folder instead of the drive
