hi i want to do an upgrade from vista premium today to windows 7, i received the discs from sony today, they are the upgrade discs and have the win 7 licence on the box,.i want to do a clean or what microsoft call a custom install, the disc they have sent only has the 32bit os, i was expecting both ,64, as i was entitled to a free upgrade but it turned out to cost 20 quid for postage, enough bitching,i was going to follow this tutorial from microsoft but am confussed, my friends have done clean installs on my pc and old xp compaqe lap top and usually they download drivers and install and phone a microsoft number to verify the os licence, this seems very different from the way my friends have done there xp clean, shall i go ahead any help is obviosly very very much appreciated, clean reinstall,i need you guys thanks

all you need to have is a net connection. The big thing to look for is if you have a upgrade or full copy. The reason for this is if you have a upgrade version in order to do a clean install you will have to go thru some hassle to get it to activate. IF thats what you want to do you will have to do a clean install then do an upgrade from your clean install so your code will activate.

so you meen i would have to do a clean install of vista, then upgrade to 7, but that seems the same. i have followd the instructions and am suspicious that what micro soft call a custom install is a clean install as i now have a folder in the cdrive called windows.old
i intentionally left 30 gig on the drive to see if it would fully wipe the whole hard drive, i have no programs except the basic windows 7 programs which i dont mind. its working fine but i really want to learn how to do a proper clean install. i think i have the upgrade disc which is now starting to piss me off and im gona ring sony tomorrow and complain, false advertiseing saying a free upgrade and then not even being able to cleanly install the op sytem. any one can help. please do.

No what u do is A custom install of windows 7 then you do an upgrade install it won't create a windows.old and it goes quick thru the install the second time.
