So my pc is:
mobo= P5Q-pro
cpu= e8500
3D driver= HD4870
I already tried to install 98, but it gave me this warning:
"No drivers found aborting installation." and several other after that.. like "device driver not found:oemcd001","win98 setup files not found", blabla.
I haven't formatted drive C: to fat32, does that give the error?
I must get win98 to work on this machine, so many old games needs to be played. :P (virtualpc is out of the option, because just few games work with it, same with dosbox)
It's just crossed my mind that i haven't found any drivers for win98 (mobo drivers i mean). Does it make any difference? can i still install the 98 or won't it work at all? I just need sound (i have old pci soundcard) and picture.
tarpeeks hyvä kone ;)

try 2000 .. that should support more being an nt4 based os.. 98 I doubt you will ever get to work if it doesn't support the chipset.

does it really count that there arent any chipset drivers for 98? could it impact on directx usage?

if you don't have drivers, then the mobo won't function. you might as well find an old PIII or athlon XP system, and use that for legacy gaming.
the lowest you can go is win2000 or xp.
ps2: v7 scph-39001 - independence exploit - hdloader 0.8c - maxtor 300gb hdd
(+[__]%) psp slim ta-085v1: 6.60 PRO B10
wii (powered by bootmii/priiloader): 4.1u - d2x v10beta53-alt (base 56) - configurable usb loader v70r51/devolution r188 - wd scorpio black 7200rpm 320gig w/ ams venus ds2 enclosure
got a whole lot more to list . . .

To be precise: how won't it function? Will the os give bsods or won't games run on it? or will it damage my hardware? or wont the os simply install?

put simply it won't work.. you will never be able to install or boot it. I have a lovely old cyrix p2 233 I use for dos retro things. runs 3.11 95 and 98 like a star on 99mb ram... 3.1 games run too fast and theres no way to chill dem mofo's out... wolfenstein at 2400fps.. yeah
The 98 era things which are giving you a problem probably demand a fat32 filesystem.. use the unpartitioned space to make a small fat 32 block and try again. 98 will run in dosbox quite happily as long as it's on a native filesystem.

None of the motherboard hardware which requires OS specific drivers (Northbridge, Southbridge, IDE controller, I/O chips) will function.
Your device manager will be full of Yellow Asterisks and Question marks that you will never be able to clear.
Many (most) of the basic functions of the motherboard will not function. Your video card, if it runs at all, will only function in 640x480 or 800x600x16 VGA mode. DX will probably NOT install.
Trying to run Windows '98 on a platform that has no drivers is really pointless.

ok, i installed w98se on older comp.
specs:
mobo= epox 8x-rai (or something like that)
graphics= voodoo 3
sound= sound blaster pro pci
cpu= Amd athlon or something like that, 1.6ghz
mem= 1024mt kingston
hard drive= 160 seagate?
I've installed chipset, lan,usb,graphic,sound-drivers,directx,firewall etc...
And now i have problem, when i try to play a game, it stops for half second (strutters?) and then i can continue for about 3 seconds playing and it does that again. very annoying. even the mouse strutters on desktop, and sound occasionly.
I looked at everest, it showed that i have 29-39% cpu usage at IDLE!
system resource manager (or what was it called?) showed that it was 40-50%
Task manager shows only the vital programs, nothing more and temperature readings are normal.
I've been reading about "powertoys", somekind wintop, but i cant find it anywhere... i think that would help.
Help!

That sounds like chipset driver problems,, that is still an xp era machine.. you need something like a p3 450-600 at the tops for 98.. with realistically a max of 256 ram .. the voodoo3 is good, but that may well be having bus/clock problems on a board that fast.. hence the stuttering as it tries to catch up with a probable 400MHz fsb instead of the 100-133 it was designed for.
Building a machine for vintage software is a bit of an art.. everything needs to be the same era.. mixing modern and old just doesn't work well.

maybe but does someone still have program called wintop? i've googled it and all the links that provided download are broken...
Edit* Nah, the problem isn't mobo or hardware at all! wintop (finally found it :D ) showed that sygate was the cpu hog. i trurned it off and the games worked flawlessly.
